Just vaguely skimmed an article on my phone (so I may have misinterpreted) and it gave me the impression that if I dont upgrade to 12 before 2017 that the 'grace period' is over and if I ever want to upgrade from 11 to 12
after Jan 1st I will have to outright buy 12 for $800?
But if I do it before Jan 1st its $199? (I also remember hearing about a sale somewhere where it might be 99 right now?)
Bottom line - Pretend I know nothing about the new plan and explain to me what my scenario and options are if I do/dont upgrade from 11 to 12 before/after Jan 1st? I really don't need to upgrade, as far as I know 12 adds nothing for me but if it means the difference between 90 dollars or 900 dollars later I might have to reconsider my options.
currently Running 11.3.1 on OSx 10.9.5. Ive never upgraded my OSx since I bought the mac in 2013.. if I WERE to goto 12 would you guys also suggest an OS upgrade while im at it?

If you do not currently have Pro Tools, it will cost $899 if you want to buy Pro Tools outright and not use the subscription model. This is about $200 more than what it costs to start with Pro Tools 11 right now but includes one year of updates and service.
In January 2016, the "grace period" to upgrade to 12 from a version you currently own at the $199 upgrade amount ends. If you want to buy it outright after that, you have to pay the $899 amount.
This is the part that hurts the most: If you buy into the new "Pay For a Year Outright" model, you are stuck in a spot where you have to pay $199 each year in order to stay current and avoid paying $899 to buy it outright again whenever it expires (if you choose to do so in the future) or being forced onto a subscription model.
