Default Firewire hard-drive mechanical noise leaks to speakers

Hi all...

I've had a snoop around and haven't yet found a solution to this:

PTLE 002R, Powerbook G4 (15", 1.5Ghz, 2Mb RAM)

I just bought a new FW drive, the same make as my old one only 500Gb rather than 250Gb. I have always had my drive connected to the FW800 port (via FW800 > FW400 cable) as the 400 is in use by the 002.

When I connected the new drive in the same configuration I got loud noise in the monitors that mirrored exactly the mechanical noise of the drive.

However, if I connect the drive to the 400 port all is good. Not much use though, as when I tried the 002 connected to the 800 port a whole new noise arrived - a consistent popping sound, a couple of times per second.

So I need a solution to either the original problem or the new one - anything that means I can work! My old drives are full and I cannot delete anything else!

Suggestions or useful nuggets of information gratefully received...

Daisy Chain.

Mac > Drive > 002

Keep it all on the FW400 bus.
