How to Setup and Sync an External Monitor to a Macbook Pro

Can anyone give me a walkthrough on how to do this cheaply? I'm hoping that I can get an old LCD monitor on craigslist and extend my screen with it from my Macbook Pro's DVI plug. Is that reasonable?

If that's doable I'm sure I will need to establish sync with it. Are there any calibration videos to find the video sync offset?

Yep works like a charm. I use that way while mixing and use an ADS pyro for fullscreen via firewire playback. Ur sync should be right on using the dvi port but if there's any lag just eyeball it and adjust the quater frames.
