Default Help on MIDI setup

Can anyone tell me how to properly set up a MIDI controller and Roland XV-5050 with Command 8,002 Rack and PC,Protools 8.0.3? I need to use the sounds in the Roland.Presently I have been using the Edirol controller (out back midi) to input on back of 002 rack, and I can trigger virtual instruments ie Strike,expand2. But how do I set it up, to also trigger the Roland. And, how can I use the midi sequence in the session, to trigger sounds from the Roland.
Thanks

I've set this up and it works great. I'm using the USB connection in Snow Leopard. I downloaded the latest driver here: Restarted my computer.

Then I went to Audio Midi Set-up (typed it in on spotlight to open it). Then I went "Window" - "Show Midi Window". The XV-5050 shows up here, but it was named "XV-5050". I double clicked on the icon and renamed it to "Roland XV-5050".

Next I navigated to Macintosh HD/Library/Audio/Midi Patch Names/Digidesign/Roland/Roland XV5050.midnam. I double clicked to open the file in Text Editor. About 7 lines down it read:

<Model>XV-5050,</Model>

I changed it to:

<Model>Roland XV-5050,</Model>

Then closed out of Text Edit and saved.

Finally, load up an instrument track in Pro Tools. Show "Instrument" lane and change the output to "Predefined" - Roland XV5050" - "channel-1" Then click on the Patch name list (right below the change view button in the Edit Window on the instrument track). Click on Change on the bottom left on the window and navigate to Roland XV-5050.

This works for me! Make sure you always label the names of your patches in the Comments fields. I have had a few times that the patches didn't load and it is good to know what they are. Also, make sure that the Roland XV-5050 is on before loading the session. Otherwise you will lose all patches.

Good luck!
