Default Not looking good for Avid...

Well, as I go to my fav mag. I see this

http://blog.mixonline.com/mixblog/20...tools-hd-gear/

A write up about Avid, and the new I/O.
Not good. When is Avid going to step up?
I know it's not out yet but, WOW, when Mix Mag starts writing bad stuff about ya, That's not a good look at all. They even talk about bug's within the system that are not fixed.

What do you guy's think?

Marc

The Truth is what it is...

Why put out new hardware (HD hardware) when the guys &|or Studios that hav HD, have HD already so new hardware & old cards are pointless "I think" especially when u hav soooo many problems with the software that has to run the new as well as old hardware that people already hav...

Other thing is, not only does many to most hav what they hav, a lot won't or can't move up
due to the fact they're on stable PPC rigs, meaning.. (well hell, y'all know what I mean)...

thatz jus what I think...

Well, this is a Mix Blog, and not exactly 'Mix Magazine'. His points are valid I suppose, certainly about 8.1 not containing any bug fixes, this I think has continued to touch a nerve.

And a bit more egg on the face when so many people had the install fail, and still Digi can't figure out why.

Not sure his beef about the Sync HD, he's complaining that it's only getting a face lift, but doesn't mention at all what else it SHOULD be getting. For me, not sure what it's lacking.

Completely agree about the cards, they are long overdue, they are still wickedly overpriced, and the trade-in program from PCI to PCIe continues to be insulting in it's prices.

But if there is some HD 'Native' solution coming as the sweetwater leak might indicate, maybe that will change things. But really, for those of us dependent on TDM plugs, there should be a much more powerful card easily producable at this point that should be 10 times as powerful, and 10 times as cheap as when the accel cards were introduced.

I'm still excited about the Omni, and anxiously awaiting it. I do suspect they won't sell quite as many as they hope, I can't imagine most people replacing 192's with the 'new' 192's just for a mild sonic improvement. And the Omni will do some nice stuff for me, and will replace my 96 I/O, but I suppose for most people, they already have mic pres if they need them, headphone solutions if they need them, etc.

I suppose it's not really until a 'native' card solution appears, if it's coming, that they'll start to move a lot of the Omnis.

Certainly it would make the most sense.

Yes and no. Yes there should be a vastly more powerful card available soon, but no, it won't be cheaper. Why? Do you think R&D has become 90% cheaper over the years? Sudden pay cuts perhaps? Or fewer people designing the hardware? And stock holders graciously expecting less profit?

No, it won't be cheaper, that's for sure. More powerful, yes.

well, it goes along with my theory and rumor that avid will not revamp the hd cards but will come up with a standalone pro tools box.; OS independent and kickass dsp. (like radar but better)
(and like most high end post production products that require dsp which are many)

so not upgrading the cards and inly the I/O means that the i/o will connect with the new avid boxes as well to keep both old and new customers happy. genius imo.

so everyone is thinking that the slipup in sweetwater saying new avid native is coming meant native like lexicon native or a product u use in your computer..
but i think it goes along better with a box that is completely native or in other words.. its own computer.

it would be a kickass move for avid as it wouldnt have to rely on neverending OS updates for both windows and apple, which problaby hurt their costs. they are slaves to whatever crazy jobs decides... "so new snow cheeta lion is going to have new AMD chips which work on 128bit computers only??!!
then pour folks at avid need to follow throough at great time and expense.
so a standalone pro tools would make it much easier on everyone.
and for us a box that can have 12 dsp cards or whatever means a lot of power.
well, just my crazy rumor thoughts.. nothing real.

Building a propriety box? Madness.

If Avid want to build software they have to face up to the fact that they are in the real world with 2 major platforms PC and Mac.

If they want to go back to putting stuff back in their own boxes, then let's all get our Fairlights and Synclaviers back out the attic!

There's no way that Avid is going to build a standalone box. That whoe mentality went out years ago with almost every DAW maker who did or was going to do that. Not gonna happen.

With the recent activity with Avid, do you really think they could even pull it off? Their own operating system, custom manufacturing of 'computers', forget it.

And it just makes no sense. They would have to charge so much it would be ridiculous, for the amount they would sell. And would you really want to be locked into a whole 'computer' that's years outdated? I mean, as it is now we can buy new Mac Pros about every 3 years (at least I tend to). Imagine if Avid built a box, would they make it upgradeable?

Sorry but I just can't ever see this happening. If that was what they were interested in, they certainly would have done it first with actual Avid software, not ProTools. Avid systems are expensive enough they could probably have pulled off something like that.

Plus, who wants an entire additional computer in their rooms, just for PT. A computer that would have to be fairly powerful, but one that you wouldn't be able to do anything else on? Makes no sense.

With the incredible speed increases, the next step should be new HD cards to replace these aging and underpowered Accel cards. There's just no reason we can't have massively powerful HD cards now. I mean, my graphics card in my computer is probably 100 times more powerful than an Accel card, and it cost me $400.

I can max out a full Accel card just by working in 'surround'. All the DSP chips used. That's ridiculous. One modern DSP chip should be able to run all the surround functions for a 192 track session.

A 'Native' solution is great for new people just getting started. If I was getting started right now, there's no way I'd go the HD TDM route. But I'm already invested in it now, so for me it's here to stay.

Doesn't really matter, because when Avid 'does' come out with new cards, the price will be massively too high, and their trade-in offer will likely be as ridiculously overpriced as the PCI to PCIe cross-grade prices were. So I'll probably just add a used Accel card or two to go to an HD4 or HD5 which should still last me for years.

What are the chances that these new interfaces are laying the ground for new cards that won't be compatible with the old 192s etc....? Then we'll all have to buy new interfaces, even if the cards are cheaper!
