They simply changed their minds. CPTK stays at $1999

Not being able to definitively come up with pricing for an upgrade like this is a sign that something might actually be happening with Avid's ownership of Pro Tools based products.

Any manager with the ability to make a decision could easily come up with a formula. Let's say each DVtoolkit upgrade was about $700 worth of buy in. So, I'm at about $1400 worth of buy in. Give me a percentage of that equity towards the product. So, say the upgrade for me would be about 1k.

Now, if a new set of management is being put in place then well, you can't commit to something like that.

Honestly I can't tell if it's something like that going on, or if it's just gross mismanagement.

whatever the case, your calculation of 1k would be a slap in the face for those of us that already bought dvtk at over 1k. i spent over a grand just to get timecode and mp3 support and i'm not gonna pay that again just for disk cache and retain my automation features, especially when there are free utilities to do disk cache already.

That's were I'm at also. I own the MPTK and the DVtoolkit. No way I'm going to buy another stupid toolkit to open up features that should be included in PT10. That's $1,500 I've spent on toolkits that are totally useless now. For all we know Pt11 could come out and include the stuff that's in the Complete Toolkit. Probably not but they've done it before. Nothing surprises me with Avid right now.

It's one of two things (I guess).

They still haven't decided on pricing structure.

They are selling off Pro Tools and the next owner doesn't want to be locked into something.

Otherwise, why would a company not want to take money from its customers? I admit, it's odd.

My gut feeling tells me that it's pricing structure and - connected with this - the future vision of ProTools in general. Since PT10 is (more or less) a transitional product I think that Avid has to re-define the complete portfolio of PT products internally. I guess at the end of the day a group of users will always be angry when a decision will be made and whatever that decision will be.

They've had time to delete my cranky posts from this thread but not time to answer the question. In fairness the employees looking here certainly aren't the ones deciding on pricing. But it does make you wonder what the ones who do decide on pricing are up to. Probably congratulating themselves on a job well done.

Anyone remember Nortel? And now RIM? And then....
