Pro Tools 12 may not be qualified on this computer, but it will run well, so ling as you take account of its limitations and try not to have anything else running at the same time. I use the same spec model (except no SSD) for some live show recordings. I can record 24 tracks of audio at 44.1k just fine, using a MOTU 828mk3 and 2x Focusrite Octopres to provide 16 channels of analog to ADAT conversion to supplement the 8x analog inputs it already has.

You can run some plugins on tracks when playing back and mixing too, but it will run out of CPU power if you throw too much at it. I use a UAD Satelite Quad Firewire and a UAD Solo Expresscard to give me 5 UAD processors worth of plugin power to run plugins on. Make sure you use the maximum playback engine buffer setting too.

I tend not to use it to finish mixes on, moving to my home Mac Pro or my studio iMac to do that, but I can get plenty of work done on my MacBook Pro when I'm away from home and studio.

Of course all of the above is subject to still having the kinds of issues that many people report with PT12 generally.

Whatever version he is running now is not running well.. so a version that requires even higher system requirements is not likely going to fix his problem. we have old core2duo workstations at work too. we can install and open 12.5 on them.. It is not fun to work in though.

Even the few old i3's we have struggle.

i7 or bust.

most importantly though, if his machine is not qualified, good luck getting avid to help you with it.

Good luck getting help if you do have a qualified computer! After all, most problems are due to 3rd party plugins, aren't they?

I'm still doing useful work on my core2duo MacBook Pro. Sure it's not as powerful as new boxes, but so long as you understand that you can work with it, if that's all you have.

I can get more out of it running PT11/PT12, than I can running PT10.

Folks, please first check Avid compatibility guidelines... Much easier that way
