Believe it or not the hardest part is getting the old chip off without lifting the pads off the pc board. There's a reason chips like this are not generally hand soldered but done in an oven. And if the unit was done with water soluble flux/solder that's a whole 'nother thing to deal with.

Also getting the pins lined up perfectly on the pads and not bridging them with solder. Fun stuff...

Yup. Been there, done that. Imagine holding a soldering tool for as long as it takes to solder all those pads. Hand cramps don't begin to explain it.

Thanks for all the advice for me to go and spend on a replacement without trying to repair
My thought is have ago what have I to loose its not working any way

They should take it to someone, some local company that does this....less than $100 bucks I bet

Problem is many don't like to deal with surface mount type parts which only furthers the whole 'let's just toss the old board and put a new one in' mentality.
