Default PT 10 hogging all system sounds on windows 7

Hello all; this issue is causing me a lot of problems. I am new to pro tools, and want to watch youtube videos simultaneously, hear facebook updates, etc - however, whenever I have pro tools up, I get no other system sounds. I've tried everything, was wondering if anyone knows how to fix this? I really want to watch tutorials and follow along, but can't right now. I'm on windows 7 and have an alesis sound card.

Can anyone help please? Thanks

Try going to Control Panel, Sound and double-click your default device on the Playback tab. Click Properties and go to the Advanced tab and uncheck "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device".

What's the model of your sound card? Are you using it's drivers and/or ASIO4ALL?
