In maybe 3 or 5 years
Todays HD systems probably will be stale. I personally am very satisfied with the affordable choices of today and naturally wouldn´t picture too much what there might be up to date, but there are some indicators already about parts which could be fashionable in only a few years.
E.g. What sample rates is concerned who knows if efficiency of higher resolution will not come to an end of perception soon. That progress could assumably be limited. About CPU s there is only liitle doubt on overwhelming standards to come. New storing techniques will be there for sure. Some new visions have been on already but were not heard of again. Laser techniques could come in question for instance. The systems might have no cables anymore. There are labs already working on putting high level connection on bluetooth. The specialist magazine "Physical Review Letters" reports that techicians in Lisbon are working on inducing information into magnetic double layers by extremly fast pulsating magnetic fields. This could be the next generation of RAM chips being ten times faster than silicium and keeping information while currency off. They only havn´t managed yet to realize structures as small as with silicium. Size : Recently someone posted an all-in-one ministudio in form of a bigger keyboard here with bigger display. While yet looking rediculous to studio freaks like us and maybe many would still stay away from such, as yet wanting to make use of a variety of pres etc. the capable compact thingy might be thinkable. And for optics of tomorrows studio: As LED techniques are rapidly forthcoming and soon be used for car lights and room illumination ( owners of Mag-lites: If you search Internet you can already find LED kits to replace the lamps ) - needing much less energy ( US currency consumption estimated to be at half in 2025 ) and lasting 100 times longer - and becoming cheaper soon, it could be imaginable that future gear will be appearing very much shining too. Just a secondary thought to share I thought. Greets Lalaman |

Re: In maybe 3 or 5 years
Here is another future feature, although it could end up like quatro systems once did as only few could afford it ( not to speak about costs for private and semi-proifessional studio monitoring systems ).
In the Fraunhofer Institute for integrated controls they have developed a sound system that looks as promising just as stereo once did to former mono standard. The system based on the so-called sound field technology is said to enable extremely natural sound reproduction. It is supposed to deliver optimal sonics throughout the room. This is achieved by usage of many speakers round about ( the walls ) which emit sound waves in a overlapping way and by this generate the desired effect throughout the room. That way virtual sound resources are not only perceived in the room but also as being outside of it . The first system with 192 speakers <gulp> has been demonstrated first time this week in a cinema in Ilmenau. As mentioned already, I don´t see who could be affording such equipment ( although some experts expect the technique to become less expensive with mass production ... but such a economical cycle can cease out or be very slow, as one could have seen e.g. with solar technique which went through both these states of development ), but I bet that when you experienced a living room as a giant music hall for the first time, you could hardly stop to kill yourself until you had that thing mounted in your home. Assumably ... Lalaman |

Re: In maybe 3 or 5 years
About your vision of lasers being involved somehow in storing technology - they already are (eg. CD, DVD, EVD, etc...). An important thing to watch out for coming down the pipeline is the move to non-moving large storage mediums such as the devices already being used in 'Super Computers' and reportadley used in CIA agent notebooks. This type of storage is obviously as fast as the fastest RAM and able to hold data even when the computer is off by maintaining a small electric charge.
Has anyone used RAMDisk as there audio drive? I am sure this would get you the fastest seek times ever! hehe. Drew.

Re: In maybe 3 or 5 years
Back in the day I used to use a 512MB RAM disk with sound designer 2. Wow.
