Default No \"Sound Recording\" option with Mbox 2 Mini

Hi,

I just got an Mbox Mini and after some problematic setup, I'm now a happy Pro Tools LE user, at least for Midi. One major problem remains: the Mbox device doesn't show up in the Sounds and Audio Devices' "Sound recording" option under the audio tab in the Windows Control Panel, which means that I cannot record audio into Pro Tools (it only seems to accept audio input from its own devices, meaning the Mbox). I already tried to reinstall the entire package. Not sure if this is related, but during the installation, I get an error message from the system that the drivers are not "Windows Certified" or something like that, although Digidesign states on their website that it was.

Here's the system information I can gather:

Computer model and processor speed: Toshiba Satellite M55 S3512, Intel Pentium M, 1866 MHz (3.5 x 533)
OS version: Windows XP Home SP2
Pro Tools version: 7.1
Amount of RAM installed: 1024MB
Any attached peripherals (hard drives, video devices, other firewire or USB devices that may be attached, etc):

Printer HP Photosmart C3100 series
USB Device Digidesign Mbox 2 Audio Driver
USB Device Digidesign Mbox 2 Firmware Updater
USB Device Digidesign Mbox 2 Midi Driver
USB Device M-Audio Keystation 88es
USB Device USB Composite Device
USB Device USB Composite Device
USB Device USB Composite Device
USB Device USB Human Interface Device
USB Device USB Mass Storage Device

Number and type (firewire, SATA, SCSI, etc) of drives installed
Disk Drive LaCie D2 quadra: ST350063 0AS (USB)
Disk Drive TOSHIBA MK1234GAX (Primary, ATA, UMDA 5, ATA100)
Optical Drive TEAC DV-W28EADT (Optical)

Other:
Audio Adapter Intel 82801FB ICH6 - AC'97 Audio Controller

A concise list of the troubleshooting you've already tried - please be as specific as possible!
Tried Install - uninstall - install several times, researched online - nothing useful has come up so far...

Any help is more than welcome. Thanks a lot,

Evita

The Mbox usage with Pro Tools is completely unrelated to it's general usage with Windows audio applications... which is what is represented in the XP "Sounds and Audio Devices" dialog.
Installed along with Pro Tools, is a "wave driver" which allows the Mbox to be used outside the Pro Tools program. Since it's "playback only", you won't see the Mbox listed as an audio device under "Sound Recording" in that dialog. What you are seeing there is normal.

As for the Windows Certification issue, that is documented in the installation instructions in your "Getting Started Guide". You must have missed that, but you did the right thing, ignored it, and went ahead with the install.

Those issues aside, you say you can't record in the Pro Tools application. Probably be best at this point for you to tell us what steps you are going through in the attempt.

"I cannot record audio into Pro Tools (it only seems to accept audio input from its own devices, meaning the Mbox)."

Absolutely correct. Pro Tools won't work without a Digidesign hardware interface and you can only use a Digidesign hardware interface to record with Pro Tools.

However, using the ASIO driver, you can use the Digidesign hardware to record into another audio program, but only when Pro Tools is closed.

And JMS40 is correct, you can use the Digidesign Wavedriver to allow other programs to use Digidesign hardware as a playback device only - no record function with other programs - but again, only when Pro Tools is closed.

Both the ASIO and Wavedriver are single client only.

Cheers,
