I was born in the early 80s, but 99% of what I listen to was made before my creation (same with movies)..

Indeed. "Perfecting Sound Forever" was one of the best books on the history of audio recording I've ever read. I would call a must read for any doing audio recording/engineering/mixing.

The elephant in the room is the massive decline in musicians' pay for live gigs since the 1970s. Back then musicians and songs were tested on stage before they ever received the financial backing to record. Today only a tiny percentage of the most talented people can afford to choose a music career. Music's middle-class is gone.

Yes Bob, also analogous to what happened in the 1920s with the transition from silent films to talkies.
Of course “silent” films never really were;
you can make a case that audiences had a better experience then than now;
from the veritable palaces that exhibited the moving picture
to the full Symphony Orchestras that played along live.

More than a fifth of the tens of thousands of musicians in the union
earned a very good middle-class living playing along to film.

When Sam Warner got interested in sound it wasn't to add dialogue at first
(since many of their patrons didn't understand English),
it was instead to put the well-paid musicians out of work.
Which is in a couple of years is exactly what happened,
and many committed suicide.

…Not so fun fact– Sam Warner never got to see the premier of the technology he championed in the Jazz Singer;
he died the day before…

To me, modern US cinema is little more than glorified home theater.

And much of the time, far less.
