Default 5.3.1 and xp crash on pro tools startup

anybody run into this problem????

here's the symtoms...

installed a 'clean' version of 5.3.1 on xp
installation 'appeared' to go cleanly...
i had 'NOT' turned off the logo notifiation before the process began however....
but software and hardware installs seemed ok...
but when i try to bring pro tools up for the first time it gets to the initialize MIDI settings and crashes!
then upon start-up i get a message from XP saying it recovered from a severe error...
the XP message ONLY began after the installation of 5.3.1, quick time, and adobe acrobat...
i read the addendums and made the necessary mods
before beginning...
after the crashes i uninstalled and reinstalled
5.3.1 with the same results...
i did have pro tools installed on a non-system drive at first. so i have tried it both ways.

the only thing i have not tried is removing the card and starting from scratch. that'll be my next move but i thought i'd throw a shout out first!!

here's my system specs...

A30P INTEL PENTIUM 4 2.26 GHZ
640 MB RAM
digi 001 interface
windows XP
80 gig system drive (1 partition) NTFS
100 gig drive for music (3 partitions) FAT32

May be don't make it with more than 512mb rams?

try to uninstall PT and 001 card and reboot.

shut down your computer, insert the 001 card then boot up.

when you come into window and it ask for 001 card driver, just leave the window on and install Protools 5.3.1 and reboot

then.... try to run digitest..

well kudos to michael in digi's tech support. we looked at all the things that are in the docs and addendums with no luck. then michael suggested that i uninstall quicktime and try to init pro tools. and behold, it worked!!!! so i'm sure a hit will be posted regarding this issue. but in the meantime here are the steps that should resolve the issue...

1) during the install of 5.3.1, if it does not find quicktime it will automatically take you to the install wizard. i imagine you could cancel out of the quicktime install but i'm not sure what kind of state that would leave the 5.3.1 install in. (not sure if you would get installation complete or not) so i would suggest going thru with the quicktime install. then you'll get the 5.3.1 install completion message.

2) then before launching pro tools, uninstall quicktime. there will be 2 options, 'uninstall everything' or 'uninstall'. choose 'uninstall everything'. this will remove any system extensions relating to quicktime.

3) after succesful uninstall of quicktime then launch pro tools 5.3.1. you should be taken to authorization screen. do your thing there.

4) after you exit 5.3.1 then reinstall quicktime!!! should be good to go then!!

hope this hit will save someone a hassle in the future!!! aloha!!!
