Best GATE plugin?

Back in the TDM days I would have said Drawmer Dynamics, but as it isn't AAX I'm going to have to say Avid Pro Expander

I don't know if it's the best but my "go to" gate has been the Waves C1 Gate for quite a while. It's able to close faster when I need it to than most others I've found (including hardware guitar pedals). Also seems to have a nice gentle release if you need that like on certain acoustic guitar for example. It's controls are easy to understand and seem to have all the options you could ask for in a gate.

I've had problems with the gate in the UAD Neve 88RS Classic (haven't tried the new Unison enabled version since I don't have a Unison interface). That plugin's gate got noticeably clicky when opening unless you're really conservative with the reduction range knob. A couple of other plugins I've tried (usually channel strips) also seem to be a little clicky if you're not careful like the SSL Duende Channelstrip.

It's also on sale this week for $39 although you have to buy the whole C1 Compressor/Gate package. I don't use the other C1 components, just the Gate.

BTW, is there something in particular you're trying to gate that your current one isn't doing well? Like the one that comes with Pro Tools?

Not an obvious one, but one of my favourite gates is the one built into McDSP's "Futz Box".

I'd initially had high hopes for Futz Box as a distortion plug-in, but we just didn't connect (though it is good for it's intended purpose).

The gate module was a real surprise though - really simple, but something kind of unique about it.

I've also found the Fabfilter Pro G very flexible.

Yes, but with very fast attack times it "clicks" in a nasty way. What I've found only couple of gates do it nicely; first was Drawmer Dynamids, second was Serato Rane, and the currently available Avid Pro Expander is the third one that I like.

Waves C1 and Sonnox Dynamics are close, though...
