Default Exporting session to CD For Dat tape mastering

Hey guys!

I’m looking to export my session via CD-R so that I can convert it to Dat for my mastering phase.

Just want to double check something:

Usually, to keep the session mix intact I start by bussing all of the tracks and recording each track onto a new busses track and then burn that.

I’m just wondering if there’s an easier way?
I only need the session in stereo so if someone can kindly advise that would be amazing!

I’m used to bussing every track to mix in analog. But this time I’m bussing in stereo for mastering.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Thanks,

Hannah.

This whole post is VERY confusing. Can you be a bit clearer please?

Is the session archived onto a CD-R? Why are you wanting to transfer the final mix to DAT? I work in mastering, and whilst I keep two full functioning DAT machines in my rack for archival transfers, it’s been a looooooong time since anyone gave me a DAT tape to master from.

If you could clarify your post a bit, I’m sure we can give you some advice and an easier way to do things.

Hi there

Thanks for responding.

I need to export my sessions in stereo to CD-R for my home studio to take to my dad’s studio, whereby he needs the format to be in dat and cd is the most reliable format due to the vintage kit he is using.

I am asking how I export the session in stereo by burning it onto CD-R.

Many thank

Ok. That makes a lot more sense.

I must ask though, are you transferring the audio from CD to DAT at your father’s studio and if so, why wouldn’t you go straight from the playback device into his hardware chain and bypass the DAT machine?

Unless I’m missing something, from what you have written, the DAT seems to be redundant. You’re taking your mixdowns to him as either audio files on a data disc or as an audio disc, but either way, those files need to be recorded in real time onto your father’s DAT machine.

So essentially, why not bypass the DAT and go straight into the rest of the hardware that you want to use for your mastering?

And to answer your question, just bounce the session to disc and use that stereo file to burn to your CD-R. Very straight forward.

No need to buss anything. I mean you can, but there’s no need. Just add a master fader and bounce that output to disk.

Also, you don’t say what version of PT you have. If you’re on a relatively modern version, your bounce will be faster than real-time, so that’s even more reason to not buss anything internally.

Okay cool. Thanks for advising.

I’m just wondering when processing the session to CD, do I have the record all of the individual tracks onto ‘bus tracks’ first? Or can I directly export a stereo mixed track onto audio CD-R? If that makes sense.

Sorry never exported in stereo before as I usually export the session as individual tracks to mix outside of the box.

I think the DAT must be for archiving then as he puts everything onto DAT and stores them away.

Thanks

Hannah.

As mentioned above, if all you want is the stereo mixdown of the entire song, then just make sure everything is set to the same output as your bounce source and away you go.

Then just drag the resulting audio file into your CD burning application and you’re done.
