midi issue- can see midi signal but cant's control Xpand2

Hi I have a midi controller- it's an old yamaha . I have set the instrument channel according to the intro to pro tools manual. I can see on the mixer channel on top that it is getting a midi signal as it moves if I tap my midi keyboard. however i do not see anything in the main volume of that channel.

i am able to get a different midi channel to control mini grand so i know that the midi keyboard works.

help please
