Default Worried about making the switch back to PC

What I don't get is ; if you're worried about PC compatibility with Pro Tools, and you're having your brother build your new PC from scratch : why wouldn't you just stick to known, reliable builds, as detailed in the i7 thread (the first pinned thread at the top of this Windows section of the DUC), rather than go in to totally uncharted territory - running a far greater risk of components being incompatible with PT.

That is a great point but, the articles i'm reading and things I'm finding out is, that down the road in the not too distant future, Apple is going to be using these Ryzen chips in their gear as well...they are already in talks with AMD about that...so I'm going to give it a go and hopefully, within a year or so, maybe months, there will be others who are using these new Ryzen processors that will be able to help make them work as good or more than likely better than the Intel based pc's for music. I could be wrong, but I don't think I am with the way these companies are talking to AMD.

I appreciate the offer, but this Gigabyte AB350 GAMING 3 motherboard comes with a FireWire port built in, and with the thunderbolt port I will be getting for a later thunderbolt interface, I believe this will be the motherboard I will be getting, still getting the Ryzen 1600X processor as well. I do appreciate the offer. I'll let you know if I regret doing it later, but I should be ok.

Keep in mind that a lot of times built in firewire cards cause issues, even if they have the recommended TI chipset. avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/faq/en404647

A non-issue if you're going Thunderbolt anyway, but just a heads up.

Thanks for the heads up, but I just noticed that the article you are referring to is from 2011.

Is that still an issue in 2017?

Anyone know if Built in FireWire ports on higher end mother boards are still an issue in 2017? I really hope that is not the case...

It's been an issue since the first Avid FireWire interface. No onboard FireWire will have TI chipsets and all are prone to problems. I have seen them work here and there, but there is no rhyme or reason to it.

Default Worried about making the switch back to PC

Question, how does TB work?

Is it a special chip on the Mobo, and functions as the other accessories on the board, i.e. Taking their place in line so to speak (for processing)

Or does it tie directly into the CPU? I.E. sans special chip on the MOBO.
