Poor sound quality

When I record the sound is like the instrument is across the room. I am recording with my mic right by my guitar through a focusrite 8i6.
I've tried to increase the gain but then it sounds horrible.

What Christopher is saying is; you have given almost zero information What guitar? What mic? Is the room treated? Are the strings fresh? Post a clip on Soundcloud and link here so we can actually hear what you hear

And I think, most importantly, how are you listening to this; thru headphones connected to the focusrite, monitors? What about direct/mix-control settings on the focusrite?
