Moving part of Pro Tools to new external hard drive

I originally loaded everything on my computer hard drive. Then I kept seeing recommendations to have several things stored on an external drive to I went out and got one. I'm using a an iMac, v. 10.4.11 with a 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. It has 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. The external drive is a 320 GB My Book Studio edition.

My question is - what should be stored on the external drive and what is the easiest way to get it there? Do I have to uninstall and re-install everything or can it be dragged from one to the other?

Put your Session audio folders on the external. Leave the PT application on the system drive.
If you are using a Western Digital Firewire drive you will have problems with that. They go to sleep.

I would leave those alone for now.

If you purchase the full version of BFD or some other intense disk streaming virtual instruments you might want to put the sample libraries on a drive(s) thats dedicated just for samples. If your just getting started with PT the Ignition Pack plugs would run best from the OS drive.

I think your better off doing it that way rather then trying to stream Audio and samples from your audio drive.

Samples.

If your planning on using a lot of Virtual Instruments.
