Pro Tools HD 9 will not open on refurbished HPz820 with Windows 7 64 bit
Hello. Longtime PT user here. After upgrading to an HP Z820 Workstation with Windows 7 Pro 64 bit with SP1 and optimizing my system using the Windows Optimizations for PT list, I cannot get my version of Pro Tools HD 9 to open.
When I launch PT from the desktop icon/start menu nothing happens. No splash screen. No error message. If I go under the Task Manager and click the Processes tab, ProTools.exe is present. So it seems like the computer is recognizing the executable but for some reason the launch process is held up by something. When I try launching PT a second time, I get a window that says "Only one session of pro tools is allowed at a time". I've tried reinstalling PT several times, in several combinations: from my install DVD, from the 9.02 and 9.05 full install downloads from the Product Download links from my Avid account, etc. Thinking it was a driver conflict I uninstalled every driver I could think of, my wireless card driver, my GPU... I've also tried installing several different GPU drivers for Quadro 4000. I've went through Avid's tech support and they could not resolve the issue, even after escalating it to the point where their engineers were looking the problem. Lastly, I performed clean format fresh install of Windows 7 Pro with Service Pack 1 on my HDD. Still can't open PT. No splash screen. Still see the ProTools.exe taunting me in the Processes tab of the Task Manager. This is a last ditch effort to get the system working before replacing my new computer. It was really expensive so I'd prefer not to, so any advice would be appreciated! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ My system is a 2x E5-2670 Eight Core 2.6Ghz 16GB 512GB SSD DVDRW Quadro 4000 850W SiSoftware Sandra ID Host Name : HP-Z820 Workgroup : WORKGROUP Computer Model : HP Z820 Workstation 103C_53335X G=D Serial Number : 2UA23***** Chassis : HP Mini Tower Mainboard : HP 158B Serial Number : 2UA23***** BIOS : HP J63 v03.65 12/19/2013 Intel vPro : 7.01.21.1134 Total Memory : 15.93GB DIMM DDR3 Processors Processor : Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2670 0 @ 2.60GHz (8C 16T 2.6GHz, 2.6GHz IMC, 8x 256kB L2, 20MB L3) Processor : Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2670 0 @ 2.60GHz (8C 16T 2.6GHz, 2.6GHz IMC, 8x 256kB L2, 20MB L3) Socket/Slot : FC LGA2011 Chipset Memory Controller : HP Core DMI2 (Sandy Bridge-E) 100MHz Memory Controller : Intel Core (Sandy Bridge-E) Integrated Memory Controller Registers 100MHz, 2x 4GB DIMM DDR3 1.6GHz 128-bit Memory Controller : Intel Core (Sandy Bridge-E) Integrated Memory Controller Registers 100MHz, 2x 4GB DIMM DDR3 1.6GHz 128-bit Memory Module(s) Memory Module : SanMax M393B5170GB0-CK0 4GB DIMM DDR3 PC3-12800U DDR3-1600 Memory Module : SanMax M393B5170GB0-CK0 4GB DIMM DDR3 PC3-12800U DDR3-1600 Memory Module : SanMax M393B5170GB0-CK0 4GB DIMM DDR3 PC3-12800U DDR3-1600 Memory Module : SanMax M393B5170GB0-CK0 4GB DIMM DDR3 PC3-12800U DDR3-1600 Video System Monitor/Panel : ACI VS248 (1920x1080, 24.0") Video Adapter : NVIDIA Quadro 4000 (8CU 256SP SM5.0 950MHz, 2GB 2.81GHz, PCIe 2.00 x16) Graphics Processor OpenCL GP Processor : NVIDIA Quadro 4000 (256SP 8C 950MHz, 2GB 2.81GHz) Compute Shader Processor : NVIDIA Quadro 4000 (256SP 8C 950MHz, 2GB 2.81GHz) Storage Devices SanDisk SD8SB8U512G1122 (512.1GB, SATA600, 2.5", SSD) : 477GB (C:) hp DDVDW TS-H653R (7.5GB, SATA150, DVD+-RW, CD-RW, 2MB Cache) : 7GB (D:) Logical Storage Devices System Reserved : 100MB (NTFS) Hard Disk (C:) : 477GB (NTFS) @ SanDisk SD8SB8U512G1122 (512.1GB, SATA600, 2.5", SSD) Pro Tools (D:) : 7GB (CDFS) @ hp DDVDW TS-H653R (7.5GB, SATA150, DVD+-RW, CD-RW, 2MB Cache) Peripherals LPC Hub Controller 1 : HP Patsburg LPC Controller LPC Legacy Controller 1 : T0 1C-11 Audio Device : HP Patsburg High Definition Audio Controller Audio Codec : Realtek Semi 262 High Definition Audio Audio Device : HP GF100 High Definition Audio Controller Audio Codec : nVidia Mutara V08 [NV2] Audio Codec : nVidia Mutara V08 [NV2] Audio Codec : nVidia Mutara V08 [NV2] Serial Port(s) : 1 Disk Controller : HP Patsburg IDE-r Controller Disk Controller : HP Patsburg 6 Port SATA AHCI Controller Disk Controller : HP SAS2208 PCI-Express Fusion-MPT SAS-2 Disk Controller : HP Patsburg 4-Port SATA Storage Control Unit USB Controller 1 : HP Patsburg USB2 Enhanced Host Controller #2 USB Controller 2 : HP Patsburg USB2 Enhanced Host Controller #1 USB Controller 3 : HP TUSB73x0 SuperSpeed USB 3.0 xHCI Host Controller FireWire/1394 Controller 1 : HP FW322/323 IEEE1394 OHCI FireWire Controller SMBus/i2c Controller 1 : Intel ICH SMBus SMBus/i2c Controller 2 : Intel SNB-E XMB Ch 0 SMBus SMBus/i2c Controller 3 : Intel SNB-E XMB Ch 1 SMBus SMBus/i2c Controller 4 : Intel SNB-E XMB Ch 0 SMBus SMBus/i2c Controller 5 : Intel SNB-E XMB Ch 1 SMBus Printers and Faxes Printer : Microsoft XPS Document Writer (600x600, Colour) Fax : Microsoft Shared Fax Driver (200x200) Network Services Network Adapter : Intel(R) 82574L Gigabit Network Connection (Ethernet) Wireless Adapter : TP-LINK 450Mbps Wireless N Adapter (802.11n (HT), AES-CCMP, 216.7Mbps) Operating System Windows System : Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate 6.01.7601 (Service Pack 1) Platform Compliance : x64

Re: Pro Tools HD 9 will not open on refurbished HPz820 with Windows 7 64 bit
Indeed. This machine should do a good job.
What exact version of PT9(and have you tried a few different builds)? What is your interface(and is Windows trying to use it as the "default playback device"? Is windows fully updated(Service Pack 1)? when you run the PT installer, are you right-clicking the Setup file and using the Run as admin option?(you should for anything you install on windows 7) Is PT set to always Run as Admin? FWIW, I have a friend that uses a Z800 with PT12.3 and its a powerhouse

Yes. Quote:
If you mean is the 'Run this program as an administrator' checkbox under the Compatibilty tab of the Pro Tools Properties window, then yes. I have tampered with all of the checkboxes on this tab. Nada. The computer is a beast! I just wish Pro Tools would work on it

Re: Pro Tools HD 9 will not open on refurbished HPz820 with Windows 7 64 bit
I don't remember if 9 used iLok or hardware for auth, but if iLok, iLok provides a legacy drivers folder with the regular installer. This might be an instance where installing the old driver will help with compatibility issues. Hanging that early might be indicative of that. Create a system restore point just in case you need to unwind any changes. If you want to experiment, download the demo of 11HD and see if that runs. It may be a low level 64 vs 32 bit driver thing.

Re: Pro Tools HD 9 will not open on refurbished HPz820 with Windows 7 64 bit
IIRC there were several issues with 1st gen iLoks on USB 2.x ports. So that might be a hardware issue if the OP is still using 1G iLok.

Re: Pro Tools HD 9 will not open on refurbished HPz820 with Windows 7 64 bit
I use 1st gen iLok/USB2 on two Win 7/PT9 rigs. Never an issue.
