I guess I don't see that as a big pain. I've had to go back to a Logic project, make a tweak and push out new audio. The exports in Logic & Reaper are faster than real-time, so to me, it's not that a big of a deal.

Of course, I don't run a commercial facility with clients. That would get old. My day job is Post, and I compose and record my own music, so it's really about how much time I want to put into it.

At the end of the day, I don't think I'm the only one that works with 2 DAW's. I've heard the "compose in Logic/mix in PT" concept touted here for years.

Like everything in Reaper, once you set it up to work the way you want, there's not much you can't do - MIDI and audio included.

I prefer MIDI in Logic, but Reaper's implementation has never thrown any road blocks my way.

Do you use Reaper's MIDI rewired (in tandem with PT)? That would be great! Or do you finish your programming and export into PT as audio?

Good idea. I will test that.

No. I tried the rewire thing years ago, and while it worked, I didn't like the extra management of settings in both DAW's.

I use the midi as-is internally within Reaper.

Of course, I haven't tried this, but I'd be looking for a situation where both DAWs would be open; midi in Reaper (to VEP as a VI host) and PT receiving audio, if all that can work (I'm sure there's a way around it)! I guess Cubase or Studio One are also possible candidates.

Reaper's very efficient in most of the ways that PT is not, but I didn't find its routing intuitive when I was using it years ago as a VI host, with MIDI in PT. It took me ages to set up a usable all-round template, and while it worked well, making little routing changes on the fly was absolutely murderous. I dropped it the moment I came across VEP, which is easy, intuitive and elegant. I never tried the midi in Reaper.

Somehow over the years, I've come to accept PT's midi limitations, and have learnt to tolerate and live with them. But I can't accept and live with PT's inability to handle 3rd party VI's smoothly, something that every other DAW does easily.

Rename tracks? Really? been doing this for years with Quick Keys..
I mean it's nice that it is built in but...who asked for that?

I'm not massively optimistic, but there's still some hope.

That‘s what i was thinking too.

Hi Claude, can you be more specific about which MIDI functions Pro Tools does not offer you? I actually find it to be very powerful, and I can do certain things way more quickly and intuitively than in other DAWs (specifically DP and Logic). I agree that it's not perfect. But, from a workflow perspective, it ticks a lot of boxes for me. Just curious...
(ps - i work with large VI templates, with a lot of libraries that employ keyswitching, etc... not to mention markers & tempo maps.)
