Question to OP - with the new iMac any fan noise issues with the larger sessions?

I agree with others that HDX cures spiking with recording in PT. But I sold my HDX system for many reasons.

I also have an Antelope interface and can at least second that using the interfaces monitoring path and leaving PT at high buffer is a solid solution. Latency is amazing there but the workflow is more complicated. Although everything you are working on will have some help - I also am sad to say (IMO) that this is likely a PT issue. FWIW - I can do recording in Logic and Studio One at 96kHz/32buffer - without this problem.

PT could take a lesson (in the vanillla world) from these two DAW's .. they seem to have a good handle on low buffer recordings ..

Really curious to see how that works out. What video card is he using? I have that same machine, but I'm actually doing more work on my 2.8 MBP. While it has less CPU, the graphics are much smoother than on my 12core. The SSL madi card I use is no longer supported, so I've still got that machine on Yosemite. That could be a factor with the graphics as well. I'm really at a crossroad with whether or not I want to put anymore money into that system. I'm really leaning towards a new 4.2 iMac with an apollo 16. Then I can use the apollo with my MBP as well if needed. I'm mostly mixing these days, but I'm a drummer and do occasional remote drum tracks so I want to keep at least 16 inputs. If I start doing more band tracking again, I can just add a second Apollo.

Some news:
- nothing changes using the internal SSD instead of the external HDD usb 3.1

- a real problem is the verb suite classic by slate digital (i really can't record only one track that the recording stop with a small session).

- a small/medium session (44.100, 24 bit 64 buffer size): 5 vst via vienna ensemble, 16 audio tracks with some plug form avid, slate and UAD, 4 aux with reverbs and delay by avid and 24 track in recording and no stop.. the medium cpu usage is between 13/25% with a maximum spike at 44%

- same session without any plugs and without any VST: cpu usage between 9/20% max spike at 25%.

-big test session 44.100/24 bit 64 buffer size (96 audio tracks with many plugs form avid slate and uad (at lest 100) 3 vst tracks with expand, 32 tracks in recording with 3 aux with 2 instances of slate reverb and cpu usage between 45/60% with some spikes but no stop) really strange.

So i think the real problem for the small session is the slate verb but not for the big one, other spikes i think are just pro tools.
It seems really casual...

What do u think? Any other improvement that i can do?

Thanks

Luca

hi, i do NOT produce anything that has this many tracks - 96 / VI's / 100 plugins and trying to record 32 tracks at the same time with Buffer 64 .. seems to be where PT is choking - i use my Lynx Mixer so i do not need to go below 128 ever .. even with VI's unless i am doing just a couple tracks of Piano, etc ..

what is the big session like without Slate ?? i know you say that it might not be the issue .. but you need to eliminate all possibilities .. and yes, it is strange that the Slate verb would give issues with the Smaller session and not the larger ..

leaving your VEP and UAD to eliminate Slate from the Equation ..

last Q: are you recording through PLugins on any of the 32 tracks in Record ???

also: i wonder of if the USB 3.1 is part of the issue ..

really wish i could help more but these sessions are well outside anything i deal with ..

cheers john
