Default External Hard drive problem

I got an USB 2.0 (unfortunetly at the time I didn't know that digidesign doesn't support it) and I am trying it out anyway in hopes that it will work. I went to workspace to switch it to become a Recording drive, but when doing so I am hit with this prompt:

"External DRIVE" cannot be designated as an audio record volume because it is not a valid audio volume"

Is there something I have to change in order for my external drive to become a valid audio volume. If not, is it still possible just to use it for back up purposes, but not to stream audio directly from? It's too late for me to return the darned thing, so I am trying to make the best out of a bad situation. Any help in this regard would be greatly appreciated.

USB 2.0 drives are not qualified for use with Pro Tools and can only be used as transfer volumes.

USB 2.0 drives can be used as recording drives. I do it every day.

They may not be qualified, but in my case, a FireWire drive would not work properly.
My drive enclosure has USB 2.0 and FW, so since I had an impending job and no time to replace the drive...

My only option was USB 2.0. It has been working flawlessly for almost a year now.
It may not be qualified, and it may not be supported, but when I lost an entire show by going the "supported" route, no one from Digi helped me, and my data was unrecoverable.

I'd say experiment before you do anything important. I don't have my machine in front of me right now, but I didn't have any problems setting up the drive for recording. I have been running OS 10.3.4, and PTLE 6.4 the whole time.

What type of HD, supported by Digi, would you advise in this specific case?

I've had this problem and got around it by partitioning the drive into 40 gig or smaller partitions. Other than that I've never had a problem using USB 2.0 drives didn't even know it wasn't approved!

They have a whole section of the site dedicated to those types of questions.

Compatibility Pages

more specifically:

Hard Drive Minimum Requirements

and

Firewire Drive Requirements

Since you already have the drive, I would say back up any important info, and reformat the drive. Use Apple drive formatting tool, and the Digi recommendations (journaling off, at least for 6.4 and older), and you shouldn't have any problems.
I mean, you already have the drive, if you back up your data, and do a couple of test sessions, you really have nothing to lose. It's not like it will screw up the hardware, and the data on your main system drive should be backed up already...

This may be the case, however your situation is an exception to the rule. It is still in the best interests of users to follow the compatibility documents for information on drives that will work properly with Pro Tools.
