Metering via Plugin for Delivery Spec - Please Clarify !
Hi guys,
beginner here, please excuse the noobish questions. I am looking into metering plugins for Pro Tools as well as the process of using the plugs to deliver content to spec. Currently looking at WLM Plus, Nugen VisLM and Izotope Insight. My questions: (1) any recommendation or notes regarding these or other meter plugins ? are there metering plugs that can write/report to csv file with timecode ? (2) in general (independent of delivery spec), do I measure the program material from first frame to last frame without the tones & beeps and then simply evaluate the final numbers ? (3) to define the dialnorm metadata value for AC3-encoded content, would I analyze my isolated DX stem using Leq(A) weighting via one of those plugins above and then declare that value in the metadata ? I've seen "LKFS Dialog" weighting in some plugs and I'm confused what that is for... (4) the Nugen VisLM plug seems to have options for various gates in the weighting algorithm... what are the different gate types used for ? Thank you ! |

May I first direct you to https://tech.ebu.ch/docs/tech/tech3343.pdf
Although the document is for the EBU R128 recommendation, it discusses the principles of loudness measurement. It will answer at least one of your questions and probably many more that you didn't know you had...yet in a readable and informative manner. |

Vsonics Vmeters works great and is inexpensive. Pretty sure that it will create a log, not in front of it at the moment. Dolby Media Meter definitely does logging.

I personally love Nugen VisLM. Love the options added in V2 (can update integrated loudness after you've changed a section without having to play back the whole programme) and find it the easiest to read and no significant hit on CPU.

Can you elaborate on the different gating algorithms and their intended usage ? |

VisLM has tons of presets, don't worry about the gating, just use the spec required by your broadcaster. Dialogue Intelligence isn't a feature of any variant of BS-1770, but was added as some people and broadcasters liked the features from the old Dolby LM100 hardware. |

I have the izotope package and its great. Nugen is great too from what I have seen. They are both way more versatile and robust than WLM. I barely use that anymore.
