Yeah, i recently go the 733 mhz after switching from running PTLE on a PC. I must say I love it so much. The Mac was insanely easy to set up and everything runs extremely smooth. I have worked on my friends mac and he has a 533 machine. The 733 does give a good speed boost. But since the 733 G4 chip is a newer version than the old ones, to get a very big difference from it software will be needed to be written for it which Apple says developers are doing now. I got 512 Megs of ram in my machine and like I said everything does work smooth. I haven't had any problems at all. The only thing that kinda bothers me is that some tests have shown that a dual 533 machine can outperfom a 733 machine. The thing that makes me think about that though is that the 733 still doesn't have software written for it and for the dual to use both processors applications have to be written for it or be running under OS X (which rules in my opinion) and I think OS X support, knowing digi, Is probably a LOOOOOONNNNNG way off. Although I hear they have been working for some time now on an OSX version. So you never know. I say if you take the 733 plunge now its definetelly worth it but its always good to keep those other things n mind. But if you want a new machine now....the 733 is a speed demon compared to any mac out there.

If I were you I would just forget using classic. untill more software arrives its often better to do most of your actual work and stuff in os9.1 In the preference menu click startup disk and you can change back and forth between starting up in osx and os 9. in os 9 just go to chooser and then startup disk and change it to mac os x. this can be a pain in the butt but if you are not switching all the time (which you shouldn't be) this way will work out best and shouldn't really inconvenience you. Its just easier doing real work in os 9 for now and just playing with os x. hope that helps.

I'm probably wrong about this, but I believe the only advantage of running OS X is if you have a G4.

Well first off I would say that OS X will better benefit you the faster your computer is (actually I think its more like the faster computer will benefit the os. which is true on any computer platform be it mac or pc). But OS X is a great OS and I can't wait till it comes into its own but all new OS's take a while to get all the kinks out and get support from developers. but its a worthy upgrade. Um, to answer the other question, I have gotten great performance out of the 733 with 24 tracks and a heap of plugins. I have been using a second ide drive I installed in my mac. (screw scsi) and I am looking into firewire drives but I don't know if I want to pay so much for the glyph. Especially considering the fact that you can only buy them from guitar stores and from music seller websites. and well all know how much they mark up their prices. (lets put it this way. I used to work at a guitar center and a guitar we would buy for 350 bucks we would sell for 2000. You do the math.) anyways if anyone knows any firewire drives that actualy work well please let me know.
