Default Re: Intel Core2Duo ... anyone got one working yet?

Right, just got my system built, I got a good discount on the chip & didn’t want to wait until the 22nd...
  • Intel Quad Core Q6600 2.4GHz S775
  • ASUS P5B Deluxe
  • 7600 GS ASUS SILENT PC VIDEO
  • 2GB Kingston HyperX PC2-8500
  • Seagate 750 GB HD (sata)
  • Seagate 200 GB HD (sata)
  • Seasonic Power Supply
  • X-Case 4U Rack Server Case
Working very solid and stable with PTLE 7.3 CS3

At the moment the Dverb score is 208, but I haven’t done any real optimisation & I am not convinced the ram is running at 1066.

A couple of quick questions:-

Others with the ASUS P5B Deluxe board, are you fitting both DIMMS into Channel A i.e. DIMM_A1 & DIMM_A2 or are you putting one in each channel i.e. DIMM_A1 & DIMM_B1.

My bios is showing single channel mode & I am wondering if this is to do with the above...

Is there a foolproof way to know what speed you memory is running at i.e. 800 or 1066.

What optimisations have others done for the core duo quads? Does it still need the dual core hot fix etc...

Many Thanks

Nick

I'm envious! I can't wait to finally get a Quad! FWIW, you can check the speed your ram is running at with CPU-Z.

Cheers for that, that is just what I was after!

According to that my memory is PC2-6400 (400MHZ) which is worrying, since I paid an arm & a leg for Kingston HyperX PC2-8500!

It also says I am running single channel...

Hi!

Fit the 2 memories in both of the yellow (or black, not yellow and black) slot and u will get dual channel.

U have to set 1066 memoryspeed and 2,25 V in BIOS manually. Otherwise they will only run at 800 MHz. My HyperX PC8500 has just arrived at Kingston RMA UK. Hopefully I get my new memories next week. The first kit had wrong rev number and only worked at 889 MHz.

CPU-Z will show actual memoryspeed but it detected my PC8500 as PC6400. It can do that, nothing to wory about. It also says 400 MHz but that is 800 (2x). So it should say 533 if u get them running at 1066.

I have disabled all NIC:s, FW, COM-port and onboard soundcard. Also prior background services and system cache. As a reference I,m using 152 MB of system memory when its just started up.

Please come back, u should get higher DVERB results!

Jamtime is correct. Use the alternate dimm slots or slots of the same color otherwise your memory is in single channel mode. FWIW if you install low latency memory it auto detects it and sets the SPD timing to the next lower level. EG DDR2 800 will configure itself as as DDR2 667. DDR2 667 will configure its self as DDR2 533. You will need to swap one dimm and set the memory timing up manually. Theres your missing Deverb's.

BTW the way the default memory behavior is covered in the ASUS manual......

Thanks for that info!

Just from swapping the ram slot my DVERB count has gone up to 259!
A BIG difference!

I am off to see whether running the RAM at 1066 is going to make a difference also...

And for those that care, the DVERB test was 24-48 1024 (CPU 90%) and recording on all audio tracks for 1 minute. EDIT: Tested at over 5 mins now also working fine...

Cheers

LOL Positive , I thought I had 260 for a while but it gave me the error message on or around 18 secs nearly every time...

If we need screenshots or whatever to give it a confirmed status (if you still do that) just let me know what you need...

Cheers

Haha No no!! I am just thinking what it can be that makes u go 15 + DVERBS. But whe have seen this amount of differenses before between nearly identical machines.

PLEASE! Get the memory setting done and let us know!!!!

Hi Sunburst79,
Not in the Paper Second Edition V2 Manual I have here it isn’t, it’s extremely vague about PC2-8500 configuration...

The bad news is Jamtime, that that setting is very, very unstable, it won’t even make it into windows...
I think I will leave it on AUTO for the moment until some more info comes to light, 259 DVERBS is far more than I was expecting, and I will always choose stability over outright speed...

Cheers
