Avid, please do your job. I have 100s of Plug ins of renowned manufacturers.
Waves, Soundtoys, Slate, Sonnox, McDSP, Softube, UAD.
It takes hours to check every plug in. Thats no solution.Yes,

2. I can confirm that some plugs work better than others,
but these plug ins works much better in every other DAW. I thought some years ago we changed the plug in format from rtas to aax to get better compatibility with plug ins. But today many plug ins works 50 or 80% "fine". I think its a Pro Tools Problem. Such a "unclear" Problem exsisted in any other previous version of Pro Tools.
Please integrate a clear AAX Plug in verification in Pro Tools that show us if a plug in work correct or not.
these CPU peaks are so frustrating.
I have a lot of Sessions where i can not work on."9173 error" all the time.
But I have to finish a album.
Terrible !
Please, please, please help us !!!
Aaaaaavid Heeeeeelloooooo !!!
1. Actually, it kinda is your responsibility the check the plugins you install. Avid cannot test every plugin in the world and they don't require you to have 3rd party plugins to use Pro Tools. So if you choose to install plugins other than what Avid manufactures, it's your job to troubleshoot them and keep them up to date. Sure, Avid can test some of the more popular plugins, but ultimately it's the plugin manufacturers responsibility to make sure it works properly with Pro Tools before they release them. That's between you (the plugin user) and the plugin manufacturer.

2. Again, the fact that the same plugins work in another DAW does not mean it's Pro Tools' fault. Those DAW's use an entirely different plugin file/format. So it's possible there is just a problem with the AAX version of the plugin, not necessarily with Pro Tools.

I would say the first step for you would be to try to figure out which plugin is causing the problem. Then see if others are having the same problem with that plugin in Pro Tools. This will help more determine if it's the actual plugin or something in your system configuration.

I'm curious -- can you tell us which plugins were your culprits if you remember?

I disagree, and very strongly.

AAX is a proprietary format. It's not an industry wide plugin format. The purpose of a proprietary format is to assure compatibility. When a company requires that all plugins used with their product conform to their proprietary format, it really is up to Avid to test plugins used with their products. They charge a premium price for their product so that it can be used reliably and with confidence in a professional environment. They set the standards, they issue the toolkits, they have a rigorous process that AAX developers must follow before a developer creates a plugin. In other words, Avid controls the process.

My guess is that one of the developers in the new project team made changes to how plugins work internally, and simply assumed he could make those changes without breaking existing plugins. In other words, he screwed up, and Avid's QA team screwed up by not catching it.

I'm not having issues, I'm responding to someone criticizing those who are. I'm using Reaper these days.

I'm wondering if this might help narrow down the issue.

I essentially have two software-mirrored PT setups -- one on a Mac Pro Late 2013, and one on a 27" iMac Late 2013. They're both running PT 12.6, both on Mac OS 10.11.6, and both with the same plugins installed. My iMac is the one hooked up to my outboard gear.

I tend to bring home my recordings from the studio and hook up the HDD to the Mac Pro where I do all the heavy lifting with the editing, and get the mix to about 75% there. Then I'll move the HDD to the iMac where I'll give it a listen on better monitors and send it through analog summing to get that last 25%.

I've been having a hell of a time lately with a recent full-length I've been mixing. My Mac Pro has been peaking like crazy with the -9173 error, jumping from about 60% to 100% out of nowhere and then back down again. I waded through it to get the project finished and fortunately wasn't worried about tracking.

However, last night I took the HDD to the iMac to finish the project, and didn't realize until I was finished that I had absolutely ZERO -9173 errors. It worked perfectly the entire time.

Same version of Pro Tools, same version of Mac OS (El Capitan 10.11.6), same suite of plugins, even the same hard drive with the same project file. If anything, inferior hardware as the Mac Pro is certainly the more powerful computer.

However, a key difference I can think of is that I'm just using a Schiit Modi 2 as the playback engine on the Mac Pro where I'm having problems. (I'm using that for A/D conversion to a Schiit Magni 2 as an amp for my Sennheiser HD600s since I don't have monitors on this system). I actually think I'm just using Pro Tools Aggregate I/O as the playback engine but I believe it's still being driven by the Schiit Modi 2.

On the iMac, I'm hooked up to a UAD Apollo 16 Thunderbolt 2, which is the playback engine, where I'm having no issues.

Can anyone else potentially trace these errors back to their playback engine configuration?

I've always come across the error using a silver apollo QUAD unit, and have tried changing the playback engine to my dangerous source, or even internal speakers. Still running up agains the problem.

I am pulling my hair out. Literally.

I also think using video contributes to the problem a lot, even if converted to DNxHD.

I'm thinking maybe updating to Sierra might be a worthwhile option? Running 10.11.6 and PT 12.6.1, MBP Late 2013, 2.6GHZ, 1TB SSD which has the OS and which I'm also recording to.

I have removed all third party plug-ins and can still demonstrate this problem with Avid only plug-ins:

Macbook Pro 15 Mid 2015 2.8 GHz i7 16GB RAM 1TB flash

Avid Only Plug-Ins, with WiFi set to On, using AMD graphics (default)

Avid Only Plug-Ins, with WiFi set to Off, using AMD graphics (default)

Avid Only Plug-Ins, with WiFi set to Off, using Intel Iris Integrated Graphics

Avid Only Plug-Ins, with WiFi set to Off, using Intel Iris Integrated Graphics, forcing higher fan speed

Hey Gang, I've had 9173 errors for years, and it's been really bad for months.

I think I've found a solution. Pretty sure it was recommended on this forum (potentially in this thread), but I figured I'd let y'all know that it worked for me.

Turbo Boost Switcher Pro ($10 USD). Install and then make sure you open the app and click "Disable Turbo Boost". I believe you have to do this each reboot.

For $10 it's a no brainer to at least try. There's a free version, but I just bought the Pro version.

I used to work for Korg as a Product Specialist, so you can be sure I had previously tried every other recommendation on the internet with no luck. So needless to say I'm beyond stoked!

I've since tested this solution on 12 different pro tools songs/mixes with a variety of Plugins. All the sessions are ones I was currently working on that had CONSTANT 9173 errors. After 2 weeks of mixing, ZERO 9173 errors. ZERO!!! :)

More info on my specific setup:

Pro Tools 12.8.1

Sierra 10.12.6

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015)
2.8 GHz Intel Core i7
16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB

Using two external monitors (thunderbolt and HDMI).

Mixing on the internal SSD drive. Sessions have been 24/44 and 24/48 mostly.

Buffer was usually at 1024. Fairly big sessions 40-60 tracks with lots of Busses.

Apollo 16 with Apollo Quad Silver with Apollo Twin (original) with Octo Satellite (all chained together via Thunderbolt).

Plugins include lots from UAD, WAVES (v9 and v10), Tokyo Dawn Labs, DMG, Klanghelm, Acustica, etc.

Good luck,

Paul
