Default advice for placing songs

Hi all, somewhat tricky mix situation that I think can be solved easily and creatively, looking for input.

I've got a kids video project, with a band in the story that performs throughout. Ok fine, nicely produced tracks with good stem separation, mixing out to surround and things are sounding good.

However there are several times when the band is playing on camera and we cut away to a different part of the venue, so I need to worldize the entire performance. This means going down to mono or stereo, placing in the sound field, EQ, new reverb, etc. I want to of course keep my stems (lead vocals, bg vocals, dialog, band, score) clean.

My latest idea is to create a pre-fader send on all my song stem tracks, and make three new mono or stereo auxes (lead, bg, band) to pick those up. These can be treated for distance, and easily panned. Then if I just volume automate the tracks down and push the sends up I should have what I need to create separation, right?

Does this make sense? Any other creative way to do it?

Thoughts and advice much appreciated!

Yeah, the pre-fader send is my favorite for things like Speakerphone. Gives me a lot of control and keeps the main busses clear of goofy plug-ins. I think your strategy is the right one.

You might consider feeding the mix continuously to the worldized busses, and leaving the worldized return faders all the way down, so you won't get a jolt when you lift those faders. Make sense?

I would output the stem tracks to a band music aux for normal band music, duplicate the aux, insert the worldize plugins you need on the duplicate and use the auxes trim mode to on/off. This way the worldize plugs get an constant feed, meaning the reverb doesn't need time to build up and doesn't have a tail when you switch back. You can also use the trim plugin if you'd like to keep the trim mix available on the fader.
You have to set it up once, but afterwards you can mess around on your track without worrying about automation.

Thanks to you both! Went ahead and set up the prefader send and it's working well. Farhoof your approach seems a little cleaner, but then I lose my nice single bus with all band/vocals/bgs whether they're treated or not. Something about having that true master up top helps me sleep at night...
