i am recording vinyl into pro tools via a phono amp into my mbox 2.

it sounds fine when i monitor the vinyl, but when i record enable it introduces massive static, even with the pads enabled and the inputs turned all the way down on the mbox2. what is happening?

Could be ground. Are you using a laptop? If yes, try to run it on battery without power-supply connected. If you work with a desktop machine check out the leads you're using to hook up the phono-preamp. Are the leads balanced? If yes cut the ground on one end, re-connect and see how it goes.

A general tip is to remove items one-by-one from your recording chain. If the problem persists after removing a particular piece of gear you know it wasn't the trouble-maker. Continue until you find the source of the trouble.
