MIDI in drops out

Hey folks

I'm working away.. (even playing on the keyboard or MPD controller) and sudenly the midi notes stop coming in. My keybboard goes through an old MOTU interface.. but MPD goes directly in via USB. but they will both stop working at the same time! Upon restart it all comes back for a while and then it happens again. I've trashed pref etc, but this keeps coming back.
Any ideas?
