Default OT: Any good Alternative to Auralex Foam ?

Hi all, i've got to make a rather 'reverby' studio space suitable for mixing & overdubbing...I bought this (minus the stupid window pane) for my own place a few years ago..

http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/page/s...roduct_id/2376

..it's fantastic...i can make a 'booth' out of it to tame room acoustics when tracking...& re-arrange it easily make a 'wall' of it behind me when mixing....but...it's a £grand for 8-9 panels.......does anyone know of any good alternatives, for this 2nd space i have to cover ?

..ebay took me here

Try this:

They're reasonable compaired to aurelex. I've made panels/baffles myself as well out of fiberglass foam and acoustic treated cloth, there are articles online on how to make them. Finding the right fiberglass is can be though depending on where you are.

If you're building something the standard is OC 703, the thicker the better. It has very "even" sound absorption co-efficients. There are good imitations available with similiar characteristics.

Ditto on the 703. Get the 2" you can double it for 4". Last time I checked it was cheaper than foam and acoustic properties are better in the lower range.

check out GIK Acoustics

It's basically rigid fiberglass (OC 703?) covered with cloth and mounting attachments on the back. $50 each for 2'x4', 2" thick. More for 4" thick, or corner traps, etc.

Is there a particular Roxul product that has the best acoustic properties?

TIA

If you use this, just make sure to factor in the cost of mounting it, encasing it, and covering it with fabric. You don't want glass fibers floating around in your environment, and lodging in your lungs. My studio and control room utilizes a lot of 703, and it works very well.

Thanks for all the replys folks, however in this case, i really am looking for an actual 'Maxwall' substitute...that is, some large sheets of Foam, that can be easily moved around...purely for the purpose of taming reverb.

The nature of the studio installation is somewhat...ah, Illegal ! *lol*....which means that anything that invloves too much nailing/covering/glueing is out of the question in this case ...it's a very Rock & roll job

Google for sound gobos

I'm not sure from your posts if you want to buy or make them.
"Large sheets of foam" can be purchased at Lowes or Home Depot. and used as backing or structural template.
It would be a lot cheaper to make them yourself and all of the suggestions given could be used for sound treatment.
