SoundToys, Plugin Alliance, Sonnox, all good choices.

F6(which might be matched by the Slate Infinity EQ, which I need to test more)
And any version of Melodyne. Create a Waves account(if you haven't already) and wait for a sale on any of that stuff(and join the forum at dontcrack.com for even better Waves deals). I love Sonnox, but its pricey. Like McDSP fine, but have things covered already. Love Plugin Alliance, but their authorization gave me so many headaches that I just gave up on them. Just my 2 cents
I never really got into the signature plugins, except Manny's and Scheps. I do see the strength in their simplicity, though, they can make for very fast workflows. I like Manny's Eq as it's quite inventive making a hybrid like that

That F6 is really handy though, with independent mid/side and sidechain mode per band, that's quite handy.

Different flavours of eqs and compressors are always handy, so I like having several on demand as well as channel strips, Scheps Omni probably being the most flexible in both functionality and tone. Reverb and delay are also very useful, I like to vary those according the the aesthetic of the production.

What I really like is the more unique but handy plugins. Trash for example, thats great at mangling. Brauer Motion is great for movement. I've been using IK's Saturator X quite alot at the moment as it's really useful having the different types of saturation in one plugin. I also like Phil's Cascade, it has a very different aesthetic than you'll find elsewhere. Probably because it was built with rare NOS parts.

Fabfilter and Plugin Alliance are also expensive on the level of Sonnox. I know because I have stuff from both of those developers (but not Sonnox). More's the pity I can't get my TC Powercore working in High Sierra as I have a license for their Sonnox stuff on that platform.

As to Plugin Alliances authorization system I've not had any problem as long as one's daw is online. And if it's not you can download a license file to go on one's daw machine.

As to workhorse plugins for clean I go to Fabfilter and Plugin Alliance for most everything else with a smattering of Waves thrown in. Their dbx160 practically lives on my drum bus; sometimes gets swapped out for the Purple Audio 77 from PIA.

To be honest iZotope Neutron is a pretty well rounded tool. Quite flexible, good place to start with a few unique tricks up it sleeve.

While on the subject of channel strip style plugins, Waves Scheps Omni, is also another well rounded, flexible tool. It has the capacity to sound old, new, or somewhere in between. So if it's aesthetics you're after, that's worthwhile considering.
