There have been a couple of shows, mostly musical theatre and a couple of orchestra pops shows where I had to use Nuendo Live because I had more than 32 tracks of inputs, usually 40-45, before I had access to HD Native or HDX hardware.

Years ago, though, before Protools 11 (PT 6-8), Protools would puke all over itself when trying to record 1 or 2 tracks even, just randomly. So the trust factor with Protools is certainly thin.
I used to schlep around a PT 7.4.2 HD3 rig with OSX 10.4.11.
Absolutely rock solid.

I might revisit PT as an option.

Most of my recordings until this past year have been at 24/48k. The longest I have done with HDX was 64 channels at 24/48k for about 2 1/2 hours, straight through including intermission. Recorded a live symphony orchestra playing the score to a movie sound track. They did 4 performances and I recorded the first 3 all on the same timeline on a Mac Pro with the HDX rig. Recording to SSDs on a Sonnet X Mac Pro Thunderbolt expansion chasis.

This past year I have been recording with my personal HD Native system in my signature, at 24/96k anywhere from 12 to 18 tracks for live symphony. Just did a chamber music concert on Saturday with only 7 channels, 90 minutes straight through. Recording to the secondary internal m.2 2280 SSD on my Lenovo laptop. With a live back up to a secondary Protools laptop.

I'm schleping around two Protools rigs now.

This was last Saturday for my chamber recording.

When I was in school I used to haul around an alto, tenor, and baritone saxophone and sometimes a flute. Now I'm hauling multiple recording rigs.

In my experience, PT is just not trustworthy for that critical of a job such as a live event, I'm afraid.

I dunno if there is a whole lot of difference between Reaper and Pro Tools in terms of tracking and stability. The main reason I use Reaper in venues is to avoid the need for iLok and license junk. I still religiously use a backup recorder with Reaper, and it saved my bacon for the first time in almost a year just last week! Any critical job really should have a backup recorder.

Just curious, how do you make the live backup into pro tools?

The one time I had a major issue, was on a HDX rig running PT12. The whole system locked up on the last song. I think the input range was near 100 tracks if I remember, it's been a few years back. The back up rig was an older rig running PT 10, and it was solid...thankfully!

I also tracked a project on a HD Native rig connected to a Venue console. That system was flaky, it didn't crash in the performance thankfully, but I was nervous the whole time. I've never had any issues with smaller projects (under 32inputs) that I've tracked directly to my MBP via Dante. In fact on my current MBP with SSD, I average about 1% cpu use with 32 tracks recording at 512 buffer. Everything I do is 24/48.

Best idea I have seen on the DUC in awhile,,, listen to this avid.

Charge $99 bucks for it too. Even better give it free to HD users and charge $99 to everyone else

I don’t use PT for live work either...for this same reason.

Yep

I have two Protools licenses, one for Ultimate and one for vanilla. I use DVS into the secondary laptop or the line level outputs from the Red 8Pre into the Clarett 4Pre that you see in that picture.

Normally I like to use DVS, but this laptop is getting old and is being flaky with DVS or my Red 8Pre needs a firmware update, so it wasn't playing nice.

Of course, this only works for 32 tracks or less. Above 32, and then I have to use another piece of software, or a hard disk recorder like a JoeCo or Tascam DA6400. (Of course, DVS only does 32 channels at 96k also, so if I'm recording more than 32 channels at 96k then I need a different solution also.)

I could get on board with this. I would happily pay $99 in addition getting a license free with my HD/Ultimate plan.

AS LONG AS IT IS SUPER STABLE!!!!

A live version wouldn't need all the extra editing, compositing, video, surround and composing tools that the full fledged Protools has. Just the ability to record, make some edit points, put in markers and notes, do playback and bounce to disk. And then be able to open the whole thing natively in either Protools vanilla or Protools Ultimate without having to go through a laborious import process.
