MP 7.4 crashes during launch after "Setting up MIDI"

Not much success for me either, I'm not even able to start 7.4.

I first uninstalled 7.3.1cs5 (which worked fine), rebooted the PC, installed 7.4 and rebooted again. When I tried to start 7.4, it iterates the plugins successfully and starts DAE, but after that it crashes immediately after displaying "Setting up MIDI". I've tried uninstalling PTMP and all Digidesign-related files a few times, and I also downloaded the installer again in case it would have been corrupted but the files were identical.

After getting completely frustrated I decided to install 7.3 (I had the installer still on my hard drive) and it started without problems.

Has anyone else had any problems getting the 7.4 to start?

Yes i have the same problem - crash duing launch after displaying "Setting up MIDI". Error in "msvcr80.dll".

I tried install PT 7.4 on fresh installation Win XP (full updated) - without avail.

I finally got 7.4 working, but I couldn't find the root cause of the original problem.

I created a new user account, tried starting PT from there and was completely surprised to see it starting normally. The problem still exists with my original user account (7.3.1cs5 and all previous versions down to 7.0 never had this problem).

My system is a bit similar to yours, I also have a non-English version of Windows XP Home Edition (in my case Finnish). Also the user account name under which PT is crashing contains Scandinavian characters. I can't say whether the non-English characters cause the problem, because the new user account name doesn't contain any "weird" characters.

Please try if creating a new user account helps in your case and post the result.

I've never used this tool, but it probably won't do any more harm to try the Tech Support Utility: http://www.digidesign.com/index.cfm?...4&itemid=25974

Corrupted preferences are probably not the issue here since you already tried installing on a clean XP and it still didn't work.

I think SiSoftware Sandra is the recommended way to get a full listing of the system configuration and installed software, instructions can be found here: http://duc.digidesign.com/showflat.p...part=1#1103324.

Please post the Sandra information (both marwaq and ivo903), I could try to see if there's anything common with my system (I'll also try to find the differences between my working and non-working user accounts when I get back home).

OK, in my case the problem really seems to be related to non-ASCII characters in the user account name. I created a couple of new user accounts and tested all existing ones. PTMP 7.4 works fine with all accounts with only ASCII characters in the name and crashes at the "Setting up MIDI" stage with every account containing non-ASCII characters (tried the Scandinavian characters "ä" and "ö").

I can't find anything obviously wrong in the Sandra info, but I haven't really followed the compatibility discussions here so maybe someone who knows about these things could have a look.

There might be several reasons for crashing. In my system it seems to be related to non-ASCII characters but in your system it's probably something else. I guess it would be time for the Digidesign support to chime in, if they're reading this...
