Which interface?
What version of Pro Tools?

Here is what I would do. Buy a pair of WD Caviar BLACK hard drives, Install one as a new system drive(you could clone your old system drive to the new one with Acronis True Image). Install the second drive for recording(format it as NTFS BASIC). Disable the wifi and try running Pro Tools. 5400 rpm drives are no good for recording(but might be okay as a system drive, but why hamstring yourself). FAT32 drives are no good for recording with the latest versions of OS and Pro Tools. The MyBook should probably be reformatted to NTFS(at which point, you MAY be able to record to it, but it always make a good backup drive). If money is just too tight right now to buy 2 drives, then get one and install it as your recording drive. Most desktop machines these days can fit several hard drives inside. Speaking of backups, Acronis will allow you to save an image of your system drive, so once you get things running good, save an image. Then, in the future, you can recover from a crash by restoring from the image. Imagine having everything loaded and exactly like it was before a crash, and it only takes an hour or so

Download the 8.0.5 update(its free) and get one decent recording drive(which will be useful, no matter what). Look for a sale on the WD Caviar Black as you should be able to get a 500GB for under $60. If that's not cheap enough, get a WD Caviar Blue 500GB for $40(but the Black is a better drive). Disconnect the MyBook for testing. If this doesn't help, try the generic VGA driver with the video card instead of the ATI driver.

what drive are you recording to? You just have one Internal drive? Im slightly confused because the Sandra is showing 2 model numbers. But that could be a factory partition. SO assuming you are recording to the Mybook...

You need to format the Mybook to NTFS. This will take around 8 hours I know cause I just got a new one in the mail and formatted it I should have hooked it up with eSata instead of USB, but i was lazy

Is your MyBook the Essentials or Home? The essential is USB only, the Home has tri hookups (USB, Firewire, and E-Sata) If its got E-SATA you need to hook it up e-sata.

USB 2.0 drives are supported for PT9 and W7, but i dont think that carries to PT8, at least I have not seen the documentation if it does.

Since you are out of cash for the moment, just focus on formatting the Mybook to NTFS, that should make some difference for the better.

When you get some extra $$$ I agree with Albee. Clone the drive you have now to a WD Caviar BLACK drive, and install it as the system drive. Move the drive you have now, to another SATA port, and use it to store backups, videos, music, docs, ect... Then get another Caviar Black to record to.

Your OS drive is not approved. It is only 5400 RPM, (7200 RPM minimum is required) and adding to that it is a Green drive, green drives are bad for music, video, graphics, ect... basically anything thats resource heavy. As Tim the Tool Man said, You need MORE POWER. Or like Homer Simpson you need MAX POWER http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4w3zdkmw2E4

Have you done the optimizations for w7? if not, do them. Also always Run As Admin.
