Default Error Message help for newbie

Can anyone point me to a description and solution for the error message:

The hardware insert could not be made active because its output is being used by another active outpu or insert.

also, i have the latest 7.4.2 installed, but i keep getting a message stating "You are running a pre-release version of ProTools.

lastly, what do you think is wrong when you record successfully but cannot hear it in playback?

sorry for the questions, i just can't find these answers in the FAQ.

Your first problem may be a conflict in the I/O setup. Unless you have special needs there, I would try opening the I/O setup and select DEFAULT. Then maybe check the manual on using and setting up hardware inserts. 2nd problem I have no idea. #rd problem, recheck your track outputs to see if they are set to MAIN OUTS(or whatever your I/O setup names them). If you see the tracks are not assigned to the correct outs, if you hold the Alt key while changing one track's output, all the tracks will change to match.

Cliff, the first problem is because you are trying to use an insert path that has an input or output being used elsewhere in the session. Pretty much what the error says.

The second is because you're using the pre-release version of Pro Tools. You should download and install the cs1 update to 7.4.2.

thanks for your quick reply, i appreciate it.
I am new to ProTools, I have looked in both my ProTools manuals and on line and can not find a suggestion as to how why this problem is occuring and how to fix it. Can you point me to something to fix this problem. Is there a site where a user can look up error messages and get help as to how to fix them?

I am not happy about the fact that my software is PreRelease, the vendor who sold this to me assured me that my system is current. I will resolve this with them.

thanks again

I thought that's what I was doing when I told you what the problem was.

I guess I should be more explicit. Somewhere in your session you have an output selected on a track or send that is using the SAME output you're trying to use for your Insert. You need to find out where that output is being used in your session and change it so that the output becomes available for use on the insert.

Make sense?
