Default Why aren\'t some of you doing this?

Question,
Besides AES/EBU digital inputs on an 888/24,
what benifits would it be over a 24 bit ADAT bridge with an RME ADI-8 pro added

http://www.rme-audio.com/english/index.htm

for about the same costs and to add another 8 I/O would be cheaper in the long run and possibly better quality with more options?

I have an ADAT bridge (used, $600) and 2 Alesis AI-3 AD/DA boxes. For about $1300 for 16 channels of I/O that I guarantee sounds better that an 882. For $300 I can get the ADAT bridge upgraded to 24 bit and I'm in business (for now 16 bit is fine). Down the road, I can get even better AD/DA if I want.

I would do a serious listen before you buy. The chips you see on the i/o cards for their 24/96 system are pretty cheap and the analog stage doesn't hardly exist.

evandaum,

$300 to upgrade your Adat Bridge?

It says $795 on the Digi upgrade page.
I would LOVE to upgrade mine for $300.

How can I do this?

That's what they said when I called and asked a few weeks ago. Maybe they were wrong. Hmmm, $795 is almost the cost of a new one! That's insane.

Just a thought - I think the $795 is a hardware exchange from the OLD ADAT interface to a new 24bit ADAT bridge - not the upgrade from the 20bit ADAT bridge. At least I hope I'm right since I have 3 20bit ADAT bridges to upgrade.

Jared is correct, the $795 is for the hardware exchange (see Hardware Exchanges in Support/Customer Service)

The 24-bit upgrade for the ADAT Bridge is $295. (see details in the ADAT Bridge FAQs)

One caveat if you want to use the Alesis boxes as inserts, not just as more inputs- I'm not sure you can. They have to be in either optical OR analog input mode as I understand it, and you would need one of each to make an insert. Doesn't work on mine, at any rate.
