Lots you could do. Aural Exciters, saturators, multi band comps, stuff like that.

BUT....

If you're just starting out, it's likely that you should concentrate on getting good at the basics. For me, getting a good vocal sound happens in this order:

1. singer is on point and having a good day (of course)
2. the room (yes, #2-you could have the best of everything but if the room is wrong, bad reflections etc, you're sunk)
3. mic
4. mic placement
5. A/D converter
6. pre amp
7. HPF and maybe some compression (yes, while recording-very lightly, once you know what you're doing)

During the mix:
EQ if needed to "fit" it into the track or attempt to correct something that didn't quite turn out during tracking.
Comp to manage dynamic range or add energy etc
DeEsser if needed
then the previously mentioned stuff above.....dlys, verbs, pitch related effects....

Agreed on all levels. There are also some cool - very simplified plug-ins too that will help you achieve a good 'radio ready' vocal sound. The Waves CLA Vocals comes to mind for $ 150 US Dollars. I'm sure there are several like that…

You can buy an audio interface for your computer that has a built-in Mic Preamp and A/D converters. You need both for sure. The better the Mic, Mic Pre and Converters - the better your overall recording will be. Plug-ins can't fix everything. Good luck...
