Default Finger strumming acoustic and getting rumble/distortion

What's happening? When I use a pick (condensor, ribbon, dynamic mikes), no rumble or distortion. I use my finger to strum an acoustic, and it plays back like it's distorting or rumbling -- I'm not clipping. When I have the headphones on, it sounds fine. It's just on playback. Comments?

2 thoughts...

1. You're probably getting a lot more low freq when you finger-pick to when you flat pick. Could be the culprit - causing a compressor or limiter to really kick in...or something?

2. I had a similar problem and it turned out to be a rattle in the guitar itself. Which reminds me, I need to get that fixed.

Scott may be on to something there(braces can come unglued sometimes, but they can be fixed). Also, If the mic has a hi-pass filter, try it engaged. Try inserting am EQ plugin and engage the hi-pass to see if either helps. Maybe moving the mic to a position that yields a bit less bass?
