Default why do we have to pay for an update?

common, what's the bloody difference if I bought Protools now or a year ago?
does this mean that as a Digidesign customer you don't get any privileges anymore after a (short) period, considering buying an HD setup might allready be quiet an investment for some of us? :@

1. If you buy something that works (and PT 5.x under OS9 worked pretty darn good) - there is no reason to expect a free upgrade. If the company decides to make an improved product and charges a nominal fee to offset some expenses, there is no reason you HAVE to upgrade.

2. Do you have the same standards for other technology items -- how about those of us still using a TiVo series 1? WHY SHOULD I BE "STUCK" WITH OLD TECHNOLOGY?

3. Do you expect manufacturers to stop development of new features once you purchase your version? If you are content with the version you purchased (as many people are), then you're done. No system upgrades or improvements needed... hey, it worked fine when you bought it!

Digi asked for $150 to upgrade to version 6. Chump change for anyone using a PT/TDM rig costing many, many thousands of dollars.

And for those who didn't upgrade, the MIX 6.4.1 deal is even better...

If you feel this is too steep, keep using your old software. There's nothing wrong with it. (except the rest of us upgraded and we're working faster/better than you can because we have better tools).

I'm talking about having purchased PT HD, with PT6.0
updating to 6.2.3 was possible an suddenly you have to pay 150$ for 6.4
and in 6months they'll probably charge again for another update

Hello. I don't understand the question. Do you mean we should never have to pay for an update or upgrade? Buy Pro Tools today and have free updates and upgrades until the end of time? When do you think we should have to pay for an update/upgrade? Never? Never, ever, never?

I agree that there should be 1 year (or so) of free updates before having to pay, when you've just purchased a new system from them.

Come on! Everyone knows that software programmers that went to a four year university and have Masters degrees in computer science live on Campbell's soup and Cheetos. They don't have to make much money to live the "nerd" lifestyle do they?

If its been more than a year, I don't mind paying for an upgrade but I hate buying something and then a couple months later its upgraded and I feel the need to fork over more money.

I'm not sure if policy has changed, but I thought any one that bought a new system would get all updates for free for 1 year from registration. Digi can chime in at anytime for the low down.
