How do I turn this off? So it only becomes Record Enabled when I click the Record Enable button?

Thanks

Command-click the record enable button to disable it ("record-safe")

That's a great option for those that have this issue. Over the last 14 years, I have never seen it on any of my Windows-based systems

That's a great workaround, but a serious bug. I'd hate to click a track to adjust a level before laying down an adjacent track, only to find I've just started to record over the other track's performance. Hence, I've already done it.

This thread was started in 2013, it's 2020, I'm on 2020.12, would be nice if it were fixed.

I guess I'm going to be 'one of those' that says he's never seen the problem on a Mac.

I had this come up suddenly, selecting instrument track(s) rec enables it(them). This was caused by the fact that I had enabled a midi keyboard in 'Peripherals' in setup menu, to have its eight rotary controllers work with an app called 'Mulligan' to control plugins. I reset the Peripheral settings and the problem was gone. I found I had no need for Mulligan anyway.
