Default PT 8 LE launch shuts down PC

Hi all, long time listener, first time caller here.
I've been running PT LE 8 on my PC for a few years, but recently moved and after the move I started getting the H/W buffer overrun message, glitchy shut downs, freeze ups, etc. Even a warning at power up that there was an error in memory slot 2, which is Greek to me. I wondered if my tower got damaged by the move or...?
I never let Windows update itself, as back in the day the update to SP2 caused problems, so I'm still at SP1.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling from the DVD and followed the Avid optimal performance setup instructions found here in the DUC and then PT launched and seemed fine. I recorded a few short sessions using only one input and found it to be doing great. Then the H/W overrun messages started again. I could often only record a few seconds of guitar on one track and it would stop.
Exasperated, I tried installing Reaper and using my Digi 003 rack as the interface. This meant using the legacy asio drivers. Reaper shut my computer down at startup. Then, when I tried Pro Tools it too crashed my computer at startup. It launches, but when it gets to the "building components" part I go to the blue screen of death.
I have contemplated a new PC, switching to Mac, a total rebuild of my current PC, but all I want to do is get Pro Tools to launch and run smoothly again.
Any wisdom from the DUC would be wonderful, and thanks!
