Re: 3rd hard drive on the ZIP bay
How did you configure the drive, for slave 2? I'm about to do the same in my dual 800...

Re: 3rd hard drive on the ZIP bay
I made the Hard Drive the Master and the DVD drive the slave. No problems and it's been in my G4 for over a year!

Re: 3rd hard drive on the ZIP bay
Hi anly beware of the bus speed, becuase that bus its slower than the other bus, because of the CD drive or DVD drive, I think. I had trouble allocating to disk to record 10 tracks at once, while playing 10, for example. the thing is that if you put the system disk in the Zip bay you can have the other bus at full speed. It works perfect in a G3 350 !!! with 2 7200rpm drives, i have an 733Mhz L3 cache machine and my Hard disks are slower than the ones in the G3 amazing!!!

It's because the 2nd Bus is a ATAPI (basicly removable media) bus. Bandwidth isn't exactly that of the ATA bus. On a side note, Just want to tell you guys/gals doing this to make sure you don't cover up the access hole in the bevel. Running 3 7200RPM drives is gonna cause a lot of heat. Just a FYI so you guys don't start melting things. Enjoy!!!

In your case where, the one thing that you have going for you is in the case of a terrible crash, then, when you insert your MacOS installer CD, it will immediately boot the CD instead of checking the rest of your ATA devices. I'm assuming this is why gaffer set it up this way. The main "gains" for that particular setup, is we all know that a hard drive is faster than a CD/DVD/ or Superdrive.

Re: 3rd hard drive on the ZIP bay
Thanks Billbo, I was curious if there was something I was missing by not making the Superdrive the slave. It is working fine in the above config, and appears to run just as fast as the ATAbus drives. Perhaps the Superdrive is on a faster ATAPI bus for DVD writing purposes. Anyway, it's working fine, and no heat problems either.
Thanks to all!!!!!! |
