Slowing Down Of Separate Clip....
I'm working on a long narration, almost one hour. The client has asked me to separate each sentence by 1 second and each paragraph by 2 seconds. Easily done with Nudge, so not a problem. However, there was also a request to remove each and every breath. With all the separations, edits and replacements, additions and pickups in the narration, there are an inordinate - at least for me - amount of Clips on the Timeline, something on the order of 1,000 or more.
Everything is working at the same speed in Pro Tools as it ever has with just a few Clips on the Timeline with the exception of one thing. As the number of Clips builds up, the time it takes from pressing "B" and the Clip actually separating goes up, quite noticeably. If I highlight a section and Delete, no issue, the highlighted section is gone. No other function I use in Pro Tools slows down as the Clips mount up. Windows 8.1, Pro Tools 12.5. I rolled back to 12.4, same issue. All Avid optimizations - and more - done and done. No other issues, PT runs fine. Anyone else seeing this?

Re: Slowing Down Of Separate Clip....
I recall a similar situation in a FCP facility, where one of the editors was suffering from really long timeline refreshes after doing anything. The database was indexing after every move. Consolidating to reduce the number of clips helped a lot.
Is it possible/practical for you to try that?

Re: Slowing Down Of Separate Clip....
Further point, I have 16 gb of RAM and disk cache is 4 gb and a Core i7.
Bob, thanks for the reply. Can't consolidate until the project is finished, quality controlled and approved. As I said, everything else except the Separate Clip command works at the proper speed.

Mmmkay....
How about breaking down the session into smaller ones? As you've observed, as the number of clips increases the system speed decreases.

Re: Slowing Down Of Separate Clip....
Bob, again, thanks for the reply. The system speed is not decreasing, certainly not in any appreciable way, just the separate at cursor command. I'm now over 1,500 clips on just one timeline and there is a very slight lag opening the Clip Gain Menu with Right Click, but as I said, everything else except separate at cursor is acting the same as a session with a few clips in it.
I'll live with it as it's not by any means a major - or even minor - inconvenience. I just click and drag and delete instead of B. I was curious if anyone else had noticed this happening. Cheers,

Re: Slowing Down Of Separate Clip....
Shut off Elastic audio if it's on. I would try to make a bunch of clips separate files. Just add a pre and post length to maintain continuity with good margins of error. Copy the track you have now and just deactivate the track. You'll still have the original file but the copy will be consolidated or made into separate files.
You should be using two tracks anyways for a speedier, referenced work flow.

Re: Slowing Down Of Separate Clip....
Dave, thanks for the reply.
Never use Elastic Audio, so it's not on. Duplicated the track, made the dup Hidden & Inactive and consolidated the edits into about 25 Clips with a total duration of about 22 minutes and 16 other Clips on another track with a total duration of about 29 minutes. Tried "B" on a Clip. Same slow down. Saved Copy In - copying all audio - opened the new session, deleted the Hidden & Inactive Tracks, Cleared and Deleted all Unused Files and now the session is back to separating Clips at a normal "speed". All good, I have a session with all the edits and a new session with consolidated files and can go back and forth as necessary. Thanks to all for your suggestions.

In my defense, the project I was having issues with got finished in 2016 and, since I rarely have more than a couple of clips I'm editing, didn't raise it's head much until yesterday when I had a lot of clips I was editing. So I searched for my old thread and found the answer. Thanks Prabha!
