Default Problems with Core Audio Manager and Mail

I just got a new (late 2012) Mac Mini quad core i7 running OS 10.8.5 and Pro Tools 10.3.8. Today I tried to open an email in Mail that had an mp3 file attached. Core Audio manager opened but the email wouldn't open and I got a spinning beach ball. I force quit Mail but Core Audio Manager wouldn't quit on it's own. When I quit it, it auto reopened. After a couple tries I finally got it to stay off. I don't have this problem on my MacBook Pro which is running the same OS and PT versions. Any idea what is causing this or how to fix it?

Pro Tools 10.3.8, Digi 003 Factory, Waves 9.2, Mac Mini i7 quad core 2.6 ghz running 10.8.5

I have exactly the same set-up except my interface is UA Apollo. So, I'd look at the 003 drivers. Are they the latest?

I do have the latest Digi 003 driver for PT 10.3.8. I don't think it has anything to do with the Digi 003 interface. I think it's a CAM quirk. I read that there were core audio problems with non-Avid programs in 10.3.3. Also, I didn't have this problem when I was running the same system on a Mac Pro 1,1 running OS 10.6.8. So I wonder if it's somehow related to Mountain Lion.

Otherwise working on this high powered Mac Mini is a dream.

i think that guy is right, i think it has to do with the 003 drivers (the core audio device) that comes installed with pro tools 10. i downloaded the avid 003 driver as well to play sound from the computer but then my computers kernel task shoots to 66% cup usage whenever the racks host 1394 light is on.

I have the same problem here. My system is PT Native PCI and Protools 10.3.8. with Mac Pro 5.1 (also had the issue earlier with Mac Pro 3.1). I have to switch the system audio to "internal speaker" before I open mail, otherwise any attached audio file freezes mail for 1 minute or so.

I think this was introduced with mountain lion. I thought this had something to do with Avid not supporting my old Mac Pro, but updating my whole system from MP3.1 to 5.1 didn´t solve it.

I agree that it must be a mountain lion problem since I never had it running the same set up on my old Mac Pro with Snow Leopard. It also seems to have something to do with interactions between CAM and the Digi 003, since I don't have this problem on my MBP running PT 10.3.7 and Mountain Lion, where I'm using the built-in sound card.

Besides switching to the built-in sound to open Mail, are there any other possible work arounds, or solutions in sight?
