Default will this work? LE5.1.1 -to- LE6.4 (001 upgrade)

I am trying to upgrade my LE001 5.1.1 -to- LE001 6.4

I have LE001 5.1.1 on my OS 9, and on disk
I am getting an extra secondary 500 GB hard drive to install inside
I will install OS 10.3.2 (panther?) on the new hard drive
I have bought and want to download LE 6.4 unto my new hard drive with the OS 10.3.2 system ( LE001 6.4 is already downloaded now on my OS X, Tiger, 10.4.11 - still not sure how I'll get it on my new hard drive with 10.3.2 operating system, save it on a disk? )

SO...

- Will my new LE 6.4 automatically detect, if installed on my new 10.3.2 on the new secondary hard drive, automatically detect the LE 5.1.1 that is on my OS 9 so that it upgrades it? or is it an entirely new system? but will it detect my LE001 hardware?

- do I have to first install the old LE 5.1.1 unto the new hard drive with OS 10.3.2?

or do I have to upgrade my LE 5.1.1 -to- LE 6.4 from where it is now on OS9, save it on disk or something, then install it on the new har drive with OS 10.3.2. ???

(and is this 10.3.2 an "OS X" or "OS 9" ) ??

if someone knows, I'd be pretty grateful
cheers

There is no "upgrade" path from 5.1 to 6.4. It's a whole new version, and requires a full install. It is OSX only.

I would install 10.3 first on the new drive, and do all the OS updates before installing PT. This is where it could get confusing. Digi only tested 6.4 up to OS 10.3.4 with LE systems so that's the last officially qualified OS version. I , and many others however are running 6.4/001s on 10.3.9 without problems. You cannot update QuickTime beyond 6.5.2 though. That's the last version that works with 6.4.

When updating the OS use the downloadable combo updates from the Apple site. Don't use Software Update. In fact turn that off as soon as you install 10.3. If you burn those onto a CD along with your 6.4 installer you'll have everything you need handy on one disk. Don't forget about the CS, and plug-in updaters.

When you get everything installed, and working dupe/clone that system to a backup so you can restore it easily if something goes wrong later. It will save you a lot of time, and frustration.

One more thing: if you plan on using Digi Core Audio, and decide to go with 10.3.9 you should use version 6.9, and install it before installing PTLE 6.4. For some reason it's worked better for me that way.

after I install and update my 10.3.2 -to- 10.3.9 and then install LE 6.4 - will my new LE 6.4 detect the protools hardware?

The installer will look for your hardware. You'll need your registration/activation codes to continue, and launch the app.

There are some plug-ins included in the 6.4 installer that are demo versions. After the demo period has expired they will nag you for activation codes at launch. Simply remove those from the plug-ins folder if you don't want them.
