Default windows/mac drive format

Okay here's a sort of newbie question. I run my Digi 002 on a Windows machine. A friend of mine was going to transfer some DA88s into Pro Tools for me on his Mac rig. I sent him a drive formatted NTFS. He couldn't access it so he reformatted it MAC Extended, made the transfer, and sent it back. Now, I can't access the files on it. It can't be that difficult. What's the trick to drive formatting so Pro Tools sessions will work with either system? We both have our setups set for forced Mac/PC compatibility but I'm guessing it's something more basic than that.

MACDRIVE? Is it a utility program? He told me his format options were MAC Extended (journeled), MAC Extended, or MSDos. Does he apply that or do I. I have to believe that Pro Tools would be capable of reading it's own sessions regardless of which computer base it was recorded on. Well, at least you've given me a direction to go looking. Thanks.

MFR,
Yes, a very useful PC utility.

you are correct. Pro Tools does that. The disk file system is different.
happy tooling,

Okay, I got it. Went with MAC OPENER. It's probably not the best one but will do for a start. Thanks again.

MacOpener doesn't support FireWire drives -- I recommend you use MacDrive which does.

That would explain a lot. Well, it's not the first time I've rushed in and it ended up costing me double. I'll be in a unique position to evaluate both side by side. Hmmmmmmmmmm

Ask for a refund for MacOpener -- and download the free demo for MacDrive.

I was using macdrive to save session files using XP to a mac formatted lacie firewire drive. It always came up with a "delayed write failed" or something like that. I called mediafour and turns out macdrive and protools don't get along this way (ie macdrive won't allow protools to save the complete file onto a mac formatted hard drive). I know you're just wanting to access your files but I thought I would throw this in.

A delayed write error using MacDrive is because you have an incompatible FireWire card -- use a FireWire card with a TI chipset and it'll work fine (any of the Digidesign recommended cards should work).
