Good advice from Bill. Disk Warrior is good w/directory maint. Norton is good for files/fragmentation. Just don't install any of Norton's stuff into your system & you'll be OK.
Any time I have a crash/freeze I immediately run my utilities to check for & repair any problems. These things don't heal themselves.

Here's a list of my PT extensions:

I know I posted earlier that I had disabled Open Transport. I forgot that Quicktime needs it. Doh!

Remember since you have a Cube you will need the USB stuff or your mouse & keyboard won't function. There may be some other stuff different from my 8500 as well.
If you click on an icon in the extension manager it will give you basic info about most things. M$ seems to be the worst exception. Gee, I wonder why that is.

Have to go to bed now. HTH LOL

Thank you for the list of extensions. I've created a set that includes those extensions and the USB extensions that are part of OS 9.0.4 Base. There were many extensions I had to turn off that are in OS 9.0.4 Base. Also the third and the last two in your list did not appear available to me to turn on.

How did you figure out how to choose the extensions that you did? How did you know that you (I mean your computer) wouldn't need anything else? Do you know whether you could run PTF with a smaller set?

All of this starts to make the allocation of tracks on a disk look like child's play. Isn't there an easier way?

Thanks for all the help.

After starting PTF with the extension set in my previous post, I got an error message that said DAE error -228. Does that mean I turned off some extensions that I need? I haven't seen that DAE error since my initial failed attempts to install PTF.

I went back to the extension set that I used when editing in PTF (the for which the bounce to disk operation had failed) and increased the CPU usage limit from 65% to 85%. After bouncing the first two minutes of my file I got an new error message saying that DAE could not complete the operation because my disk drive was too slow (54,000 rpm) or my drive was too fragmented. I'm going to defrag my dirve and then try again but my 20GB drive has about 18 gigs free so I don't think fragmentation should be a problem.

a drive can be fragmented even if it has a lot of space left on it. search the duc for more detailed explanations.

Norton Utilites said that my drive had 31 fragmented files and 1119 fragments of free space, with the largest being 6.9GB. I have optimized (not just defragged) my drive for CD mastering, in which all of the free space gets put at the end in one contiguous block (18.3GB). Let's see what happens now.

With a disk optimized for CD mastering, the bounce failed after about one minute, again with the message to remove some plugins because I was losing CPU power.

Is anybody from Digidesign watching this thread? I sure could use some help.

These ext's are specific to my 8500, your cube shouldn't have them.

This is where you will have to research what your machine needs to run. There are some major differences in our hardware. Basically I learned through the ext's manager & a LOT of trial & error. The list I posted was for example only.

All of this starts to make the allocation of tracks on a disk look like child's play. Isn't there an easier way?

Unfortunately that's the classic Mac OS. Unlike Windows at least you can figure it out without a college course. OSX is UNIX based so that will be a whole different can of worms. I'll let others blaze that trail for a while before I take that route.

Thanks for all the help.

Your welcome!

are you still having problems??? I noticed that you said that when you are trying to bounce to disc that it said you were running out of cpu and to remove plugins ... these are things like eq's, compressor, limiters, etc... within pt itself, let me know if you're still having trouble...

Hi john,
i am using cube too. i had the same "not enough cpu power" error too. i will start a new question item see if there will be any help. bty, learn computer stuff is very diffical at first, because people cannot expect you to know nothing, and the problom is they don't know what you know so they can talk to you at your level. anyway, a lot of reading is a must. i am a prepress professional, and i can tell you that any one of the major desktop publishing program's manuel can be 1 to 2 inches thick. take care and talk to you later.
