Default getting that crunch

Im having trouble with my guitar, I set it so when I strum it comes to about halfway up the meter. When i go to palm mute it overloads it, even when it doesnt peak on the meter it still sounds like it is overloading. How can I fix this so when I strum and palm mute it is the same volume level?

Well there is a lot of information missing for anyone to answer this. Are you running direct? Using some sort of preamp? Are you using some kind of amp modeler? Running through a head and a cab, then micing? With each of these there are different solutions.

pick hard with palm muting and set the level till it almost hits red, then your good to go, this is all we can do without outboard gear I think?, this works for me for now, would outboard compressor help before signal hits the digi?
if so, which affordable compressors do the job?

signal chain:
Guitar > TubeScreamer OD pedal > Marshall JCM800 > 4x12 cab > SM57 at 45 angle > high quality XLR cable > digi002's preamps.

This also works for a dynamic singer and you don't want to compress to tape, mult the signal and set two levels, one for the softer strum and one for the hard mute so you still get good levels on the strum.

I overcame a lot of problems with dual micing by turning the volume on the track down. the sum of the 2 mics will clip the master fader. Usually when I track distortion guitar I generally pull the master fader down about 4 db to accomodate that.

You can try using a compressor/limiter and limit the output to normalize the sound (bring the more quiet stuff up and limit the peaks of the palm mutes), but that could kill the dynamics if overused. You could also try using less bass (maybe a low cut or just the eq on the amp). Moving the mic a little off axis could also work.

An outboard compressor would do the job. The problem is the chain. You shouldn't use a compressor into a mic pre.
It should be Mic > Mic Pre > Compressor > Converter (digi001 in this case).

FMR makes a great compressor for $175 called the RNC. The Preamp is very good too, much better than the stock digi pre's IMHO.
