Default Why does it Crunch??

sometimes When i record i PT 7.1.1 I starts to crunch in time (not same bpm as i record in), it sounds a lot like when a CD-disc spin (sort of).

I running Macbook 2,16 GHz with Mac OS X 10.4.10 and ive tried a lot of things to get rid of the crunching:

Bluetooth and airport is off.
I´ve tried different USB-ports.
I´ve changed buffert size.
I´ve downloaded software and combo update.

The problem appaer irrespective of how few tracks om running.
And no, my disk is far from full.

Somebody, please please help!!

Which Digidesign hardware are you using? What do you mean by 'crunch'? Is it coming out of your monitors or are you hearing hard drive noise or something else?

Do you possibly have a CD in the drive?

I´m using mbox2, and no there is no CD in the drive.

It´s difficult to explain the crunch.. Maybe i should say that its more of a ticking sound, its clicks. And it clicks in a certain tempo (not the same tempo as i record in (and no its not the metronom).

The sound only appear when i push the playback or record button.

What may this be??

Are you recording onto the system drive? If so, it maybe the sound of your HD trying to keep up. An external drive is recommended and should fix that problem. If that is indeed the problem. You still haven't clarified if it's a mechanical noise or it's coming out of the monitors.

Thank you for responding!!

Sorry, it´s not the monitors. yes i´m recording onto the system drive, could it really be the HD that makes the sound?

If that´s the case i´m glad! Then i just have to get an external drive to get rid of it! i just wanna be sure that thats the problem before i go and buy stuff!

Thanks!!

Yeah, it sure sounds like it's your HD. I've never ran into that sound on my Mac, but the PC at work makes that sound fairly often and it's just used to browse the internet. Also it's not recommended to record to the system drive. Here and here are some of the details on what's recommended for hard drives. Hope this helps.

Thanks!!

I´m also getting CPU for nothing! If i Buffer size 512mb, using only one track without plug-ins i still run in to CPU-overload. I always have to work with the highest buffer size.. strange!

Yeah the internal HD is slow and the cpu is having trouble getting audio to/from it. I believe the stock drive is either 4200rpm or maybe 5400rpm and 7200rpm is the min recommended speed. Also the more ram you have the better. It will improve overall performance too. Check OWC and crucial for better deals than OEM ram. Hope this helps.
